Our current societal views are similar to the phrase, “I want it all and I want it now.” Through the growth of technology and mobile applications we are able to achieve instant gratification. A recent study on mobile behavior says “consumers are spending over eighty-five percent of their time using mobile applications”, but only “five mobile applications are constantly being used (Perez 2015)”. There are a variety of applications that fill the void for every moment day from workout challenges, shopping, and gaming only five applications are regularly used? This begs the question “why are these applications so successful?”
According to Forbes, there are eight factors in creating a successful mobile app. The product has to do one something extremely well, and be able to appeal to the consumers’ community. “It must be well designed, both in terms of visuals and the user experience. Also, it is better or more engaging when the user can invite friends to use it (Larizadeh 2013)”. Also, the app has to be cross cultural, and used on both Apple and Android operating platforms; “The iPhone was our introduction to the smartphone and apps ecosystem, but Android is now the dominant platform with over fifty percent market share in most markets. Sometimes it’s easier to start in smaller markets in Latin America or Asia because the volume of installs needed to get to the Top 25 in the U.S. is about thirty times higher than in countries like Mexico (Larizadeh 2013)”. The Facebook app is innovative because until its release in 2008, there was no way to connect to desktop login while on the go, and when one was able to connect and post anytime and anyplace it cemented the mobile app as number one.
