College and high school are two different animals. As the end of my first semester at EIU comes to a close, it has clearly been a much different experience than my high school experience. Going off to college, I expected it to be a little different than high school just because I was going to be living on my own, and I would have the sole responsibility of taking care of myself. The realization came rather quickly that there are differences between the two. College is expensive, the undergrad workload has increased compared to the last four years, and being involved in college athletics also adds a new dimension to my schedule. I had to quickly learn how to adapt to the college experience or else I wouldn’t be able to step up to the new demands. Not every kid on the team is going to play Division-1 Athletics, so their passion for success on the field isn’t the same. Also, sometimes teams won’t have any cuts because there won’t be any kids to cut due to low involvement in the sport. Coaches don’t get as mad because the need to win isn’t the same as with college athletics. There aren’t any strength or conditioning coaches for the teams to use. It is usually the head coach who runs the conditioning for the team, which can be a problem if they aren’t certified. Sometimes they don’t have the knowledge or reasoning behind each drill. They just do it the same way because they have always done it that way. College and high school are very different from each other.
