Class is a set of concepts in the society about who is who and who gets to have say and who does not. They are usually divided into upper, middle, and lower classes. I grew up in a country where class was distinct. Class prevailed in every part of the society. Rich children did not serve punishments in school while the rest of us did. Rich children could afford to wear new uniforms while the rest of us wore old unfirms that were torn. Rich children ate well at the cafeteria while the rest of us ate once and ate local made food that was not healthy called akara and boli. The rich children could afford to go to school parties and wear the nicest clothes while the rest of us could not. Rich children could get to be privileged while the rest of This idea is that talented people are more successful than even people with money and privileges. This idea projects that people get what they want in life just because of individual characteristics and attributes. The reality is that this is not true because people get better in life because of their class privileges and wealth. The myth is the American dream that if a person juts works hard enough they will make it in life and get the resources they want to live a good life. It is to say that if a person does the right thing at the right time then they will achieve high success. It is a myth because it does not work that way. The system does not work the way the people actually think it works. Wealth is shared unequally amongst individuals in the United States. For instance some individuals get inheritance while others do not. It would not be fair to say that the individuals with no inheritance are not talented enough. The idea is also seen in race. A white person not as talented as the black person may get ahead because of their color. In the United States, people assume since it is the land of freedom that they get to where they want in life by hard work and talent but it is a myth. Class is a “relational social categorization based on economic, cultural, and social characteristics” (Barnes 2016) this includes a person’s: income and wealth, networks and connections, cultural knowledge, and social status. When a person has a high social status, that often means that they have more power in society compared to a person who is in a lower social class than they. A good example of class and how it separates the lower classes from the higher classes are private schools. Private schools are often very expensive and people who are in lower class systems often cannot afford to send their kids their, causing an even larger gap between classes. Growing up in The United States, people are given this idea of an American Dream. Almost every child is raised to believe they can become and do anything they want to do, if one works hard enough. However, a majority of people believe that there is a separation of class in American society. Gregory Mantsios author of “Class in America-2009” believes that Americans do not exchange thoughts about class division, although most of people are placed in their own set cluster of wealth. Also political officials are trying to get followers by trying to try to appeal to the bulk of the population, or the middle class, in order to get more supporters. In every civilization there exists a hierarchy that is accepted by the people that are a part of it. This hierarchy, which is present in all societies, is called a class system and usually includes an upper class, a middle class, and a lower class. The upper class consists of those who are the richest in a society, the middle class consists of the working people, and the lower class consists of the poorest people. There is one class system that consists of five tiers, including one that is below its lower class, and differs from any other system; the caste system of India. In a caste system, the class that is received is hereditary and cannot be changed like in other societies. The civilization of India has an extensive history with this longstanding and controversial caste system that has evolved over time and is still in place today.
The American dream is the general belief that American Citizens all have an equal opportunity to succeed socially and economically, regardless of any predating circumstances. This idea has been accepted as possible by the majority of citizens in this country. This “dream” cannot be true, as there are multiple discriminations in this country, which make it impossible for everyone to have the same chance to succeed. Biases against racial minorities, women, and citizens from lower social classes are examples of just a few reasons that everyone does not have the same chance to succeed in our current economic and social system in America, resulting in unequal chances to achieve “the American Dream.”

The first of these is property. Property consists of furniture, jewelry, bank accounts, and other materials that can be quantified into monetary value. Income is known as the flow of money. Prestige is the next characteristic looked at when determining social class. Prestige is the value which different groups of people are judged with. (Henslin, 2014) Different occupations within society offer varying levels of prestige. The final aspect looked at when determining class is power. Power is defined as the ability to exert your will within society. That is what make the idea of “hard work equals success” very dependent upon natural born talent and opportunity which in turn makes this aspect of the American Dream more realistic rather than romantic.

In his essay “Land of Opportunity” James W. Loewen details the ignorance that most American students have towards class structure. He bemoans the fact that most textbooks completely ignore the issue of class, and when it does it is usually only mentions middle class in order to make the point that America is a “middle class country. This is particularly grievous to Loewen because he believes, “Social class is probably the single most important variable in society. From womb to tomb, it correlates with almost all other social characteristics of people that we can measure.” Loewen simply believes that social class usually determine the paths that a person will take in life. In today’s society people are viewed as being in different classes depending on how much money they bring in. The categorization of people is known as classism. Classism is simply the prejudice or in favor of people belonging to a particular social class. Classism is known as one of the largest social problems plaguing the world today. Classes are formed according to how the rules of the following institutions; government regulations and economic status. It is held in place by a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that ranks people according to their; economic status, family lineage, job status, and level of education. There are three major classifications to which people are titled. They include upper or high class which includes the people with the most money. The middle class who includes the people that brings home the average income. Finally, the class titled the lower class that includes the people who have only one income coming in or none at all (“What Is Classism.”). In the classrooms these classes still remain and the students within each class have different ways in which they learn, and view schooling. We as educators have to look passed their ways and address each class the same.
The class system places the individual in the social system based on his achieved status. This status is earned or chosen. This includes educational level, careers, and spouses.
