When people look through the windows of the popular fast food restaurant In-N-Out burger, they see young, energetic, decent looking individuals who seem to enjoy interacting with their customers; but looks can be deceiving. Thinking back, my first job at In-N-Out was an all-around inequality experience. I remember feeling that acknowledgement of my hard work had gone un-noticed; other employees would advance as I stayed in some sort of hole. More noticeable, I was the only African American female surrounded by a majority of Caucasian males and females. Everything that had to do with me succeeding had been delayed because management never took any interest in my portion of equality. In all, after analyzing I found these “not so fare” experiences, relatable to sociological theories such as: Racism, the Glass Ceiling, and Social interaction having to do with my Ascribed status.
Scott was the Caucasian store manager impressed with my interview answers, yet my dark complexion stood out more than my persistence to land the job. I was a desperate, black teenager begging for a job. It took four weeks for him to hire me; but for what reason, why deny me for so long for something so simple? In any other case, after me he had hired a white female classmate of mine within two weeks.
After research, my unanswered questions turn into a better understanding. Scott was “playing the part” (Goffman 1963), being that he gave into acceptance of having to finally hire someone of color. This would show a bit of parity being that African American people working at In-N-Out Burger in Natomas was rare thing.

What happened in the past makes me a tougher person in the work force today. I no longer feel like that employee who can be taken for granted. When I am told to complete a certain task I do so and expect recognition shortly after. My persistence stands strong when work needs to be modified to create better work flow. When tasks are done incorrectly I work hard to collect data and make sure the proper training is conducted to create less error. In conclusion, the theory behind racism is no excuse to not hire an individual who his eager to work as it is outdated hatred, the Glass Ceiling stands for nothing but games and Ascribed status is something to be proud of.
