When people look through the windows of the popular fast food restaurant In-N-Out burger, they see young, energetic, decent looking individuals who seem to enjoy interacting with their customers; but looks can be deceiving. Thinking back, my first job at In-N-Out was an all-around inequality experience. I remember feeling that acknowledgement of my hard work had gone un-noticed; other employees would advance as I stayed in some sort of hole. More noticeable, I was the only African American female surrounded by a majority of Caucasian males and females. Everything that had to do with me succeeding had been delayed because management never took any interest in my portion of equality. In all, after analyzing I found these “not so fare” experiences, relatable to sociological theories such as: Racism, the Glass Ceiling, and Social interaction having to do with my Ascribed status.
Scott was the Caucasian store manager impressed with my interview answers, yet my dark complexion stood out more than my persistence to land the job. I was a desperate, black teenager begging for a job. It took four weeks for him to hire me; but for what reason, why deny me for so long for something so simple? In any other case, after me he had hired a white female classmate of mine within two weeks.
After research, my unanswered questions turn into a better understanding. Scott was “playing the part” (Goffman 1963), being that he gave into acceptance of having to finally hire someone of color. This would show a bit of parity being that African American people working at In-N-Out Burger in Natomas was rare thing.

What happened in the past makes me a tougher person in the work force today. I no longer feel like that employee who can be taken for granted. When I am told to complete a certain task I do so and expect recognition shortly after. My persistence stands strong when work needs to be modified to create better work flow. When tasks are done incorrectly I work hard to collect data and make sure the proper training is conducted to create less error. In conclusion, the theory behind racism is no excuse to not hire an individual who his eager to work as it is outdated hatred, the Glass Ceiling stands for nothing but games and Ascribed status is something to be proud of.

Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
Institutions in the businesses sector are swarming in racial discrimination, much of which is covert and difficult to detect and prove. Racial discrimination excludes, marginalizes and exploits those citizens who are discriminated against, ceasing any opportunity for economic progress and development. Under certain regulations some businesses are required to diversify their workplace by hiring certain amounts of people of color, but in reality these small quotas do not do much for the overall condition of the people who are being discriminated against. Businesses that fail to take action on racial discrimination tend to have lower levels of productivity. This stems from employees not being interested in working hard, or because people with exceptional talents and skills choose to shy away from certain places of employment due to the fear of racial discrimination. Employees who feel wronged also tend to switch jobs, forcing the organization to spend more time and resources on hiring and training new employees, besides coping with the low productivity of a new employee. In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. Blacks are prevented from enjoying life in the American work force because of their race. The problem is that Whites cause Black misery, but do nothing to change this. Jill Nelson’s White supervisors could have been more accommodating to Nelson’s needs. They could have taken measures to make her more comfortable in the work place, possible by hiring more Blacks. Their newspaper could have began to portray Blacks in a more positive, truthful light.

In an ideal world, every person is treated equally when it comes to getting a job, advancing in his or her career and being treated fairly in the workplace. Unfortunately, discrimination still exists in hiring, firing and promotions; and the diversity of the workforce regrettably can cause hostility in the workplace when individuals do not appreciate and respect the differences among themselves and their co-workers.
