Childhood obesity is a huge problem that has reached epidemic levels in developed countries. Over twenty-five percent of kids in the United States are considered overweight and another 11 percent are obese and about 70 percent of obese adolescents grow up to become obese adults. Childhood obesity is considered to be one of the most serious health challenges we face in the 21st century. In 2010 the number of children overweight under the age of five is estimated to be over 42 million. Obesity in children can lead to very serious health issues such as heart disease, Asthma, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. Childhood obesity can also lead to serious emotional and social issues.

When people think of sugary drinks they often think this is limited to soda but juice and other sweetened beverages fall into this area. Sugary drinks can be consumed very quickly and are less filling than food so this results in a high-calorie intake. Another factor that has shown to be a contributing factor of childhood obesity is snack foods. Snack foods include things such as chips, baked goods, and candy. Portion sizes have gotten bigger over the past decade. Some of these conditions include fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, Type 2 diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, skin conditions, impaired balance, and orthopedic problems. Most of the health problems associated with childhood obesity can be prevented and can disappear when a child or adolescent reaches their healthy weight but some will continue to have negative consequences on them throughout their adulthood. In some cases, these health problems will result in death.
On top of the many serious health issues associated with childhood obesity, childhood obesity can affect a child and adolescent’s social and emotional health. Obesity can be described as being one of the most stigmatizing and least socially acceptable conditions associated with childhood. Children that are overweight or obese are many times teased or bullied for their weight. Overweight and obese children face many hardships including negative stereotypes and discrimination. Discrimination against individuals has been found in children as young as the age of two years old. Children that are obese are often excluded from activities, especially any activity that requires a form of physical activity. Overweight children have difficulty participating in physical activities because they tend to be slower than their peers and have to contend with their shortness of breath.
