Walt Disney once said, “the age we’re living in is the most extraordinary the world has ever seen. There are new concepts of things, and we now have the tools to change those concepts into realities. We are moving forward”. Disney was a great thinker, inventor, and innovator. His greatest belief that he lived throughout his life was that we need to follow our dreams, make them come true, and do what makes us happy, not rich.
Walter Elias Disney, better known as Walt Disney, was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5, 1901. His father, Elias, was a strict and religious man (Walt Disney Biography). Walt’s mother, Flora, brought laughter and warmth to the family (Isbouts). Walt was the fourth of five children. He had three older brothers—Roy, Raymond and Hubert— and one younger sister—Ruth. Growing up, the Disney’s didn’t have many toys to play with, however, Walt loved to draw pictures and cartoons.
In 1906 the Disney’s moved to Marceline, Missouri (Isbouts). There they owned a farm with many animals (Walt Disney Biography). Walt learned to love animals and learned the value of teamwork while living on the farm. His family then moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1911 when Elias got typhoid (Isbouts), and their farm failed (Walt Disney Biography).
In Kansas City Walt and his brother Roy worked a newspaper route that their father had purchased. Elias was a perfectionist so he was hard on his sons as they worked. At this time Walt started being interested in entertainment. He would go to vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin shows and then put together skits with his friend Walt Pfeiffer (Isbouts).

Back in the roaring twenties America was seeing such world-changing phenomenons such as The Great Gatsby, and penicillin, but what took the world by surprise was none other than Walt Disney and his lovable creation, Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney, throughout his entire lifetime and career, always had an idea, a spark, and a way to make things better. Even in the face of tough times, he never failed to keep his optimistic attitude and kind faith in humanity from infecting those around him. A major part of his success was due to the technological innovations that revolutionized the film industry.
Walt Disney was born in 1890 to a woman named Seora Isabelle Zamora. His father, Elias, met Isabelle in California that same year and the two carried on an affair that ended with the birth of Walt. Later, Elias brought the two back to Chicago, Illinois where Isabelle became a housekeeper for the Disney family. Walt was assimilated into the Disney household and treated as the biological son of Elias and Flora Disney. Isabelle was with the family for years, being passed on from the Elias and Flora household to the Walt and Lillian family years later (Eliot 152-157).

He returned to the United States in 1919 to Kansas City where he worked as a newspaper artist. Walter “Walt” Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Illinois, but he lived most of his life in Missouri. He began drawing and painting when he was quite young and would sell his work to family friends and people in the neighborhood. His parents, Elias and Flora Disney, were very hard workers for their 5 children. Elias worked at a Jelly Factory, while his wife Flora worked as a homemaker caring for all of her children. As Walt grew, so did his imagination. The more famous he got, the more ideas and dreams he could make a reality. Working out of his Uncles cramped garage, in the sweltering California heat.
With a name like Walt Disney, it seems like you are expected to do great things and have your name known across America. From a young age, Walt Disney had an interest in all things animation. Growing up in a time where animation and TV was making its first appearances, Walt Disney wanted to be a part of the sensation. Striving and pushing forward with his natural talent of the creative arts and entertainment, Mr. Walt Disney became one of the most well-known entertainers that is mentioned all around the world. His great animation and artistic works but also with his world famous characters and popular theme parks, the first one, Disneyland, being built in Anaheim, California in 1955.

In 1910, two years after Walt’s brothers Herbert and Raymond ran away, Elias contracted typhoid fever. As farm upkeep became too difficult, the Disney family moved to Kansas City, where Roy left home to work as a bank teller. When Walt was 16, he and the remaining family members once again moved, this time returning to Chicago. Walt soon enlisted with the Red Cross Ambulance Unit. His wife, Lilly was unable to wake him up one morning and she called the doctor who prescribed a long trip for rest and relaxation. Walt wanted each of the dwarfs in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to be a distinct individual. The solution was to create names for them that would reflect their personalities. Part of the study will consider Walt Disney 's background, and his self-made success in America such as the famous Disneyland we all know today. Multiple resources have been collected that focus on Walt Disney 's life and how he significantly impacted the entertainment industry and became a symbol of America, to achieve this goal. The primary source is the book, Remembering Walt: Favorite Memories of Walt Disney by Amy Boothe and Howard E. Green. In the book, there are several interviews with family members and coworkers. In 1906, his family packed up and moved to a farm in Marceline, Missouri. By this time, Walt discovered that he was very interested in art and drawing. “More things of importance happened to me in Marceline than have happened since – or are likely to in the future.” (Disney, 7) Later on, the Disney family had to move to Kansas City because Walt's father, Elias, could no longer take care of his farm when he became very ill. Elias owned a newspaper company to make money for his family and had Walt and Roy, one of his other sons deliver the papers. In 1910, Walt's family once again packed up and moved to Chicago. Walter did not want to move with his family because he wanted to finish school, so he stayed behind and worked for his brother Herb through the summer. In fall, he moved back with his family and enrolled at McKinley High School. Walt did have an interest in his classes, but found a love for drawing cartoons which were featured in his school's newspaper.
The man, the dreamer, the artist, the creator, producer, the pioneer, and the developer; Walt Disney accomplished building his own empire along with his legacy that continues to grow every day. Every individual has a story about what drives them to be the person they are today and will be tomorrow. Personally, I love his impressive movies and alluring theme parks. Walt Disney has played an integral part of my family’s life. In fact, my daughter became engaged at the end of Main Street, in a fairy-tale moment in front of the enchanted Cinderella’s Castle, in the Magic Kingdom theme park for her birthday over the holidays. Just about everyone has some knowledge of Walt Disney’s incredible endeavors. However, how many people can say that they have knowledge of the man Disney was before creating Mickey Mouse and what follows?
