The Benefits Of GMO Products

We live in a world that is constantly changing and advancing due to technological advances, especially in the field of molecular engineering. Molecular engineering has helped mankind in ways, ranging from cloning to better food quality. Our world is constantly growing and with it brings more demand for food. Meeting those demands means growing and consuming more genetically modified food. Genetically modified food is derived from the word genetically modified organisms or GMO, which are organisms or plants, which are enhanced with desired traits such as resistance to pests or tolerance to droughts. Only if were to consume more GMO products will we be able to survive. GMO should be more widely used for three main reasons. They have better quality, …show more content…

The first reason why GMO products are better is because of their overall quality and durability. GMO products are grown with only selected genes and traits that can be beneficial to us. GMO products such as fruits will be bigger and also have better taste too. Carrots can better taste and watermelons can be sweeter too. Also bigger fruits and vegetables means a person will have more to eat and it will also be more worth it. You are getting a bigger portion for the same price. According to a study done by the Iowa State University, without genetically modified food, food prices will be higher in a way that soybeans prices will be higher by ten percent and corn by six percent. This means that overall food prices will be higher because soybeans and corn are bases for most …show more content…

One of the most controversial arguments is that it might cause allergy reaction due to gene crossing and that it is not safe to consume (Genetically modified foods…). Gene crossing is the process used to create genetically modified seeds which would later be food. Even though it is said to cause allergy reactions, most of the food we consume these days are genetically modified and we are still fine. At least 85% of soybeans, corns and canola are grown from GM seeds; most of the cooking oil we consume is most likely genetically modified and the world still haven’t faced any problems concerning the consumption of GM foods(Genetically modified foods…). It is safe because of the extensive research done by researchers which is overlooked by the food and drug administration. There was one research done in 2012 by the University of Caen in France, “claimed that one of Monsanto’s corn GMOs caused tumors in lab rats”. But the research was thrown away because of inaccurate test methods. Another research done by the University of Perugia in Italy, “published a review of 1,783 GMO safety tests; 770 examined the health impacts on humans and animals” and they found that none of the food were harmful. If it is dangerous, the product won’t even hit the market (Broke Borel).

Another issue is that people are afraid that the genetically modified plants might escape into the wild and cause
