Becoming a historian requires a lot of different skills and first starts with becoming familiar with the work place. Such as one, must receive the proper funds to keep a historical building alive by grant writing and educating the community by using good public speaking skills. Also, I must sharpen your researching skills to set up displays, and proper training before starting the archive process.
Sandy, the curator, gave me a tour of the Milford Historical Society. I moved some needed books form one place to another in the Bryan-Down house. Also, I sorted through some biographies of the Ells family people. Sandy went over preliminaries for the Hartford Conference. Once Sandy left, Ardienne, soon to be the former president for the Milford Historical Society, and I picked out a costume for the education tours. I found out that for the first few education tours I will be watching what Ardienne does. I was told to arrive nine the morning for each school tour and one tour will be added for June tenth. The following day I went to the Hartford Conference.
Marcia Winter, the new president of the Milford Historical Society, attended a conference on grant writing with me in the legislative house in Hartford. There I made plenty of connections with other historical societies, museums, agencies for support collection care. I have a whole list of places I can contact now to either visit, intern, or find out information for my future. One of the most important lessons I learned in order to get grant money was that you must do a lot of community projects to show how important the historical building is to keep maintaining the building or archives within it. ...al work. I was told how the data entry sheets will be made, and later how we will all put this data on the computer in the archival program, Past Perfect. I was told about terminology for archiving data, and how I will always be working in a group of two minimum when archiving data. We shall start archiving data the week after next. Also, I received a past perfect training disk, so I may learn the program better on my own. I am supposed to be a major resource in this program to the rest of the Society members, so I must learn everything about it to be a minor expert. Therefore from this internship I have already gained important historian skills.
In conclusion my first two weeks of my internship were filled of eye opening experiences that shall prepare me for my future field. I have completed up to this point thirty and a half of my hours for my internship.
My internship began with a short orientation of KPMG’s office located in the Wells Fargo Building of downtown Minneapolis. After some introductions and a few training sessions that outlined what was expected of us in terms of the rules and laws we were required to follow including disclosure of client and firm information and independence affidavits, for example, we were briefed on our trip to Orlando for National Internship Training which would take place the following work day. Training for Partnership-focused federal tax interns would last a whole week filled with events and educational seminars that would introduce us to tax fundamentals and software tutorials that would be helpful during our time with KPMG. National Internship Training would be the primary training session for every KPMG intern in the nation, hosting thousands of interns assigned to all pillars of accounting (audit, tax, and advisory). Investigating the Extent to Which Historians Can Be Objective ‘You have reckoned that history ought to judge the past and to instruct the contemporary world as to the future. The present attempt does not yield to that high office. It will merely tell you how it really was’ - Leopold Von Ranke ‘There are no facts, only interpretations’ – Nietzsche Here we encounter two diametrically opposed views concerning objectivity. It can be argued that “true” objectivity cannot exist, as history is more exposed to differing interpretations than any other discipline and to be “factual”, dispassionate or truly objective would be at best unrealistic and at worst impossible. Historians, in their selective analysis of the past on the basis of surviving historical records and evidence, draw conclusions, which must necessarily be subject to their own individual interpretations – interpretations that are in turn subject to the historians’ own individual ideologies.
A beginning group of historians to take a closer look at is the empiricists. The empiricists have a very strictly factual and logical view on history and how to examine it. They believe that past is both “observable and verifiable” and that through adherence to three strict principles, the past can be represented objectively and accurately. (Green, Troup 3) The three aforementioned principles can be summed up as: meticulously examining historical evidence and verifying the evidence with references, making sure the research is completely impartial and free of biases and prejudices, and using an inductive, or observational, method of reasoning. (Green, Troup 3) The empiricists seek to find universal historical truths through objective research and sticking to the facts.
Historians and geographers utilize many of the same types of evidence, but in different ways. For instance, both historians and geographers use maps, landscapes, and bodies of water to explain their work. It has been around 14 hours since I have gotten back from the Freshmen Retreat, and I happy to be able to write about the success of the trip in all parts, regarding my personal goal, what I learned about my fellow advisory peers, and realizing a bit more about myself.
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
I began, initially at CSM, as a volunteer archives assistant, learning how best to organise, accession and catalogue items in the collection. I have proven myself to be a committed, capable and reliable intern, and am responsible for assisting the curator and senior members of staff with their activities and
History is very important for everyone, and everyone should learn about history. Learning History can help to learn about people situation and life from the past. It also helps to know about many events and even some fact from the past. When people want to learn history, they should search about any subject or event from the past and tries to learn the both side of the subject. They also need to try to find what is hidden from that subject, so they can learn more about it. They also need to find out who wrote the subject that they learn about, for not all the historian show the bad side of the event, and they just show the good side. History is a story told over time. It is a way of recreating the past so it can be studied in the present and re-interpreted for future generations. Since humans are the sole beneficiaries of history, it is important for us to know what the purpose of history is and how historians include their own perspective concerning historical events. The purpose and perspective of history is vital in order for individuals to realise how it would be almost impossible for us to live out our lives effectively if we had no knowledge of the past. Also, in order to gain a sound knowledge of the past, we have to understand the political, social and cultural aspects of the times we are studying.

The importance of the study of world history to me personally as an American is very significant because I hope to find a career where I will work with many diverse people and I not only want to know them, but I want to have an understanding of where they came from in order to associate with them better. Another reason is that an American can be from any culture from around the world. Americans aren’t any certain race or religion, so we have to understand our fellow citizens just as they need to understand us. I was in definite need of a course like this because before I started taking this class I had no idea of the simple concept of the different beliefs between Hinduism and Judaism. I had heard of the different religions vaguely in high school, but was never actually taught about them. I didn’t even know that Jews did not eat pig because they thought it was a descendant of the devil. If I weren’t to know that, somewhere down the road I might have offered one of my Jewish friends a ham sandwich and that would have been a very embarrassing situation.
Bonnie the secretary introduced me to my new teacher. As Mrs. Bonnie was leaving the room, my new teacher Mrs. Evaheart introduced me to the class. As I stared at the class I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. I wanted to go back to my old school where I had friends, knew almost everyone, a place where I didn’t feel lonesome, a place anywhere but here. As I saw each and every one of my new classmates faces the utter dread that I felt slowly began to fade as I saw a familiar face. History is everywhere today. I don’t think some people really realize how broad the word history really is. Basically when someone hears the word history they automatically think of some sort of culture like the ancient Egyptians, or some important date like December 7, 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the United States officially entered the Second World War. But people don’t really realize there are so many other types of history. World leaders are making history with wars, conflicts, and new laws; movies are making history by selling outrageous numbers of tickets, athletes are making history by setting records everyday, and students are making history by graduating college. The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I know for a fact, however, that I reached satisfaction with both of my goals at this internship at MKI and know whole-heartedly that I did everything in my power to exhaust my resources in
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
