Australia’s culture is something most people do not know about or understand, but to the people of Australia it is very important. This essay’s purpose is to give a better understanding of its culture specifically its history, government, society and military. Cultural awareness is very important, especially to those who serve in the United States Army for they might encounter them in training or serve together in war.
This will benefit all to read and become culturally aware of the country and its people. It is believed that over 50,000 years ago Australians arrived by boat from Southeast Asia. Most 18th century Australians were hunters and gatherers. They had complex oral culture and religious based values on reverence for aboriginal mythology. This mythology, referred to as Dreamtime is in the sacred era and believed that spirits created the world. In 1770, Captain James Cook chartered the east coast of Australia for the British. The First fleet of eleven ships carried 1500 people and half of the colony consisted of convicts all arriving in Sydney Harbor on January 26 1778. In 1868, when penal transportation ended over 160,000 men and women had arrived in Australia as convicts. These criminals arrived because they could not go to America anymore. In the early 1790s, life was hard for prisoners both male and female. The aborigines suffered because of the new settlements when they bought diseases. New settlers in the 1820’s turned land given to them into farms. The aborigines suffered even more when settlers started moving into their territory for work on the farms. Australia experienced an average of 3.5% economic growth over the past 21 years. The countries growing economy features a very low unemployment rate of just 5% and a low debt of $1.397 trillion American Dollars. About 75% of jobs are in the services sector, making it the largest part of Australia’s economy. The open market in Australia has little restriction on imports of goods and services. Australia’s open market has stimulated its economies productivity over the past 21 years as well.

Hypothesis: The Australian public made a significant contribution to the war efforts from 1939 to 1945, through sacrifices on a personal and national level. The Australian Aborigines society is relatively well known in Western society. They have been portrayed accurately and inaccurately in media and film. Dr. Langton has attempted to disprove common myths about the infamous Australian society, as has her predecessors, the Berndt’s, and National Geographic author, Michael Finkel; I will attempt to do the same.
What is the connection between official education policies and key events in Aboriginal Australian history? How have Aboriginal people responded to these policies?
Australia is a very unique place, along with our multiculturalism there is also a strong heritage surrounding us. At first thought of Australian heritage we think about such landmarks as Uluru, The Sydney harbour bridge and The Sydney opera house, The Great Barrier reef and other internationally recognised places. But our heritage goes much deeper than that; it is far more than outstanding icons. Along with these icons there are also unsung places like the old cattle stations, Aboriginal missions, migrant hostels, War memorials, our unique wetlands and the towns and cities we have built. Adding all of these things together, helps to tell the story of who we are and how we have shaped this land in the unique identity it has today.
Australia is a relatively young country; only becoming a unified nation in 1901 (Commonwealth of Australia, 2012). A young country is no different from a young person; identity is an issue. Questions of who am I and where do I fit in the world are asked, and unfortunately not often answered until a tragedy occurs. National identity is a sense of a nation and its people as a connected whole. This feeling of cohesiveness can be shaped by many events in a nation’s history but none more so than war. War is a stressful, traumatic affair that changes forever, not only the people that go to it but the nation as a whole. Many consider the Great War Australia’s tragedy where we became a nation (Bollard, 2013) with our own modern identity.
Aboriginals have inhabited Australia tens of thousands of years before any European powers had reached the land. Aboriginals lived simply lives and valued the lands which they lived on. Lifestyles of Aboriginals were threatened with the arrival of British colonizers in the late 1700s and early 1800s, who tried to integrate them into their society. The colonizers also saw the Aboriginals as a backwards, inferior people who were unable to develop. The notion that Aboriginals are inferior to whites may have caused the impacts Aboriginals have had in shaping modern Australia to be overlooked. This effect appears to be apparent in the development of Australian sport, however, Aboriginals have played a significant role in shaping Australian Rules

In the nineteenth century, the “History wars” became the fight between the most prominent historians revolving around the deception of frontier conflict between the labor and coalition. The debate aroused from the different interpretations of the violence that took place during the European colonization and to what degree. It became a crisis in history, emerging from the dispossession of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI) that resulted in exclusion of their traditions and culture. The ATSI were the first people of Australia that brought along a different culture, language, kinship structures and a different way of life (Face the Facts, 2012). Post European colonization was a time where the ATSI people experienced disadvantage in the land they called home. With the paramount role as future educators, it demands proficient knowledge on the Australian history and one of the most influential moments in our history started from the first European settlers.

Within Australia, beginning from approximately the time of European settlement to late 1969, the Aboriginal population of Australia experienced the detrimental effects of the stolen generation. A majority of the abducted children were ’half-castes’, in which they had one white parent and the other of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Following the government policies, the European police and government continued the assimilation of Aboriginal children into ‘white’ society. Oblivious to the destruction and devastation they were causing, the British had believed that they were doing this for “their [Aborigines] own good”, that they were “protecting” them as their families and culture were deemed unfit to raise them. - What/how does it tell us about living in Australia during times past? (100 - 150 words)
It was interesting to see that nearly all of our participants had travelled out of the country. Some of our interviewees had even been to more than 10 different countries. One girl that was a participant in particular had been to over an incredible 20 countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Hong Kong, more incredibly at only age 16. She said that she loves going to new countries and getting a feel for how different cultures live, and to be able to learn their cultural customs during her ventures. Another insight provided from our interviews was that only just this year, a 19 year old student went on a month long trip to India with his family. As his mother was from India; this trip involved meeting relatives for the first time and getting in touch with the culture his biological background presented. He described this opportunity as the best thing he’s ever done. It is safe to assume that this month long voyage would have provided meaningful insight towards his growing global mindset.
Australia is one of the world's developed countries. It has busy cities, modern factories, and highly productive farms and mines. Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of wool and bauxite. It also produces and exports large amounts of other minerals and farm goods. The income from these exports has made it possible for most of the people of Australia to have a high standard of living. In the past, Britain was Australia's most important trading partner.
