Many organizations, schools, and businesses hire an athletic trainer to help their employees and team members. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities(99). Athletic trainers can work in a large number of organizations. High schools hire them to help with their athletics and injuries that may occur. Colleges hire them for the same reason. Businesses hire them for their gyms in case there is an emergency. We are going to focus on an athletic trainer in a high school setting. Twenty-six percent of certified athletic trainers work in the high school setting. I have personally been helped through injuries by an athletic trainer in high school which is why I am doing the high school setting. What does an athletic trainer really do? The first thing an athletic trainer does is create an assessment of the injury. This means to figure out what the injury is. Once they know this, they can then provide the care that the athlete may need. They can do this by using equipment, physical therapy techniques, and medications. Master’s degrees are very popular in the field so it would be smart for me to get a masters. I have very good patience as I have worked with people with disabilities for the past eight years. This takes an incredible amount of patience because I work with people that have all kinds of disabilities(mental and physical). Through job shadows and internships I have a better understanding of how to diagnose and evaluate injuries. I would definitely need to take more classes to have a further understanding.
