Applying the Background and Methodology of the Research Process

The study was properly conducted with well-designed research problem, study purpose, and hypothesis, and a relevant literature review. These elements of a research article enable the researchers to clearly state the need and importance of their study. The elements also help to define the uniqueness of the study.

The article addresses the problem of childhood obesity, which is a significant issue in health care. The prevalence of obesity during childhood is on the increase across various parts of the globe, especially in the United States. Childhood obesity is associated with multiple chronic health conditions, including premature death during adulthood. The childhood health problem is promoted by the modern environment, which encourages overeating of foods that are high in calories and fats, while discouraging physical exercise. This implies that the family unit plays a significant role in promoting or discouraging childhood obesity (Eagle et al., 2012, p. 836). According to the article, the problem is important to health care administrators, as it enhances their knowledge of the causes of childhood obesity and the preventive measures that can be used to avoid it.

The purpose of the study is to investigate family related factors that affect childhood obesity. Several recent studies have identified factors such as lack of physical exercise, long hours of television viewing, and poor eating habits as the main causes of childhood obesity. However, none of the studies has investigated the impact of household income on childhood obesity. For that reason, the main purpose of the article was to investigate how household income can contribute to childhood obesity (Eagle et al., 2012, p. 836).

This paper reviews one of such studies, which is “Understanding childhood obesity in America: Linkages between household income, community resources, and children’s behaviors” by Eagle et al. (2012). The article is reviewed based on the study topic and purpose, research question, hypothesis, variables, theoretical framework, review of literature, and research design.
