Pet owners have varying opinions on whether or not spaying and neutering their animals is the right thing to do. When an animal is spayed or neutered, the organs that are responsible for reproduction are removed so that the animal is not able to produce offspring. This is also called “fixing” an animal. Neutering, which is done in males, is a surgical procedure in which the testicles of the animal are removed to prevent the production of sperm. While spaying, which is done in females, is a surgical procedure where the ovaries and uterus are removed. It is important to spay or neuter your pets because it is better for their health, character, and the world’s animal overpopulation. Fixing an animal can have a great impact on the behavior and character of the animal, making them calmer and better listeners. When an animal is fixed, rather than intact, they tend to care less about the natural instinct to roam and reproduce. Also, intact males have a natural instinct to mark their territory, which is done by peeing on objects to show other animals that the object is theirs. This is extremely frustrating when “their territory” can include owner’s couches, chairs, beds, and just about anything else that the animal finds open. These babies then tend to either die off, which is unfortunate, or they grow up to live on the streets, often adding to overpopulation by reproducing; creating a cycle. When an owner spays or neuters their pets, it decreases the likelihood of unwanted puppies for the owner if it is a female dog, or a male dog getting another female pregnant, thus adding to overpopulation.
