Many people don’t spay or neuter their pets, especially cats. There are a lot of benefits and yet according to The Humane Society of the United States, six to eight million cats enter the shelters each year and while three to four million are adopted out, another three to four million are killed. “An unsprayed female cats, her mate and all of their offspring producing just 2 litters per year (the average is 3-4), with just 2.8 surviving kittens per litter can total to 66,088 cats in just 6 years” (Goldstein & O’Keefe 4).
SpayUSA says that the benefits of spaying include no heat cycles, less desire to roam, risk of mammary gland tumors, ovarian and/or uterine cancer is reduced or eliminated, especially if done before the first heat cycle, reduces the number of unwanted cats, and helps cats live longer, healthier lives. Not only are many health issues reduced, but the overpopulation decreases dramatically. Those 66,088 cats are reduced even if only by a little bit. SpayUSA also says that the benefits of neutering reduces or eliminates risk of spraying, less desire to roam, therefore less likely to be injured in fights or auto accidents, risk of testicular cancer is eliminated, and decreases incidence of prostate disease, reduces the number or unwanted cats, decreases aggressive behavior, and helps cats live longer, healthier lives. This means less homeless cats walk around injured or lay dead on the side of the road. In short, if people fixed their cats, many problems could be greatly reduced.

Thousands of animals are put to sleep each year due to not having any available homes for them to be adopted. According to Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol in Domestic Animal Overpopulation, “The average female cat can produce two litters of six kittens per year, a female dog can produce one litter of six or more puppies per year, making pet overpopulation a significant problem.” Animal overpopulation is costing money and you can help the pets with spay and neutering programs. Evaluation of the mobile spay and neuter clinic will be evaluated both quantitative and quantitative. Veterinary, Executive Director, and Shelter Director will input data into the PetCare database. Management staff and committee will work together to create the client satisfaction survey and community awareness survey. Data results will be given out in the newsletter, annual report, and social media. Long-term outcomes include seeing a reduction in animal over population. Another measurement will be animals coming into the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri already being spay and neutered.
For many cat owners, their cat’s impulse to scratch can become a disastrous problem. Cat owners believe that the only logical solution is to have the cat declawed. It’s natural for cats to scratch and use their our claws to live their daily lives. Cats use their claws to play, climb, and in many situations as a form of self-defense. So the question that presents itself, is it really necessary for cat owners to have cats declawed. The only problem with declawing cats is that it is unnecessary and inhumane mutilation. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Pet overpopulation is a major global issue. It involves issues of human health and sanitation and poses questions of ethics and humane treatment of animals. Current methods of surgical sterilization have obvious limitations; they are costly, time consuming and inadequate at addressing such a large scale issue. However, recent research is exploring several viable alternatives to invasive surgical procedures. While still in the development stages, two of these, Neutersol and ChemSpay are the most promising.
Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
