Persuasive Essay Hunting

For centuries, humans have been hunting for food; but in today’s society, hunting is no longer necessary. Advances in the modern world gave people access to Grocery stores and Supermarkets where they can purchase meat instead of going into the woods to shoot down and slaughter an animal in order to feed their families. There is nothing wrong with hunting for food and there may even be times when hunting is necessary for human survival. Unfortunately, because hunting for survival is no longer the norm, much of today 's hunting is done for sport, trophies, or just for the rush of a kill. When, in reality, sport hunting is cruel, unnecessary, and should be banned globally.

In a 2009 article written by Delaware Action for Animals, the author writes:

"Elite" in this instance refers to having the amount of money required to participate in this sport, with hunters often spending more than ten thousand dollars to go on one excursion. Many of these hunters are even paying to be a part of an organization that allows them to hunt not only in the United States but internationally as well. One organization, in particular, the Safari Club International (SCI), is based in Tucson, Arizona, but they have more than 100 chapters (clubs) in foreign countries and more than 50 percent of their members are doctors, lawyers, and executives that make more than $100,000 a year (Delaware Action for Animals). These hunting preserves across the world, offer hunters a place where they can go for a nice gourmet dinner, a night in a luxurious hunting lodge, and the next day be given a high-powered rifle with a brief orientation on how to use it and then be taken to the “shooting area” to kill exotic animals. Many of these captive animals are zoo or circus animals that are too old to make money for their owners so they are caged in and are not able to run away or fend for themselves (“Canned and Internet Hunting). It is cruel, immoral, and unnecessary especially in cases where the animal is wounded but not killed. In a 2008 article written by PETA, they revealed that, “A study of 80 radio-collared white-tailed deer found that of the 22 deer who had been shot with "traditional archery equipment," 11 were wounded but not recovered by hunters. (“Sport Hunting”). As motivated as they are, hunters who use traditional archery equipment, guns and other weapons are not always accurate which results in missing the vital organs when they attempt to make their “kill shot”. When a hunter misses the vital organs to make it a quick death, it often results in the animal running off and the hunter not being able to find it to finish the kill, leading to the animals suffering a slow and painful death often even days or weeks later (Lapierre). Even if hunters miss the animal entirely, the stress and fear the animals are put through from loud noises the hunters create makes them not want to eat.
