Milkman steals what he thinks is his Aunt Pilate’s stash of gold. Because it isn’t gold, he leaves the city of is birth and begins a search for gold, a search that leads him to his family’s history. Milkman finds some of the answers to his questions about his family’s past, linking him to a past of resistance, liberation, and loss and implanting in him a desire to live and connect with people. Milkman gets the idea that his family history is of great interest to him. As Milkman was walking along, he finds Grace Address, who is a watch theft and Susan’s Byrd friend. He finds her address inside the box and smiles, until he notices that he left his gold watch back at Susan’s house. All of a sudden, he came across Guitar leaning against a tree, waiting for him. Mad, Guitar blame Milkman of finding the gold and sending it to Virginia. Guitar is convinced of Milkman’s betrayal, and claims that Milkman is trying to destroy the Seven Days Society.
