HABAKKUK
Characters
Habakkuk as a minor prophet book of the Bible is mainly a conversation between Habakkuk and Yahweh; therefore there are not many characters in the book. The only two present characters in the book are Habakkuk and Yahweh although, Habakkuk does mention terrible ruling, inferring a bad king but never mentions names. The uniqueness of this minor prophet book is that there is little known about Habakkuk as a prophet. It is assumed the Habakkuk was some sort of temple musician (1 Chron. 25:1) because he played with his own instrument to sing his song that is chapter 3 of the book. It is known that Habakkuk lived during the time as Nahum, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah (Bruckner 202). The importance of the book is not focused on Habakkuk …show more content…

Habakkuk cannot understand how such a just God is using the evil Babylonians because he allows them to take over Judah. God explains that they must suffer before they will be given the intervening help of God; the message of the book is mostly seen here (Hill 663). God’s answer reveals his first message; a righteous individual there is a responsibility to stay honest even when God’s plan seems to be confusing. God’s second answer to Habakkuk is that he will punish the Babylonians but only when he feels the time is right. The message here is that God will show justice at his own time. At the time Habakkuk had this conversation with God the sin that was occurring was very powerful and came close to shifting Habakkuk’s faith.
Relationship to the New Testament and contemporary society Habakkuk is quoted many times by the prophet Paul in the New Testament. The reason that Paul quotes Habakkuk is because of the message he had received form God to relate to his current situation. In Acts 13:41 Paul is trying to show that God is trying to take action but might not be what they expect. The reference is how God used the Babylonians and how he will also use Jesus to show the Jews his wisdom. Again Habakkuk is quoted in (2:4) by Paul I Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:22. Chapter 7 focuses on the mercy ad justice of God and the Symbolism of fasting. The concern of fasting was important during this time of repentance but God tells the people that they were never truly fasting for him so there is no point (Zech &:4-5). Chapter 8 is the message of Zechariah regarding the restoration of Jerusalem. The message to Jerusalem is that God is now going to help them rebuild their city despite the disobedience of their ancestors (Zech 8:4-23). The main message that is taken from the book of Zachariah is that during times when the future is uncertain turning to God and asking for forgiveness is the most honest way to regain blessings. Also Zechariah’s message is that people of God must be well towards him in order to receive well from him.
