I have a friendship that is almost nonexistent because of social media. Jamie and I were best friends until I began to go to a different school; we did not get to see each other as much but still hung out nearly every weekend. To me, the distance made the time we spent together more special. When Jamie and I would actually get to hang out, she would always be on her phone. At first, it did not bother me, but then she began to become so consumed in her online life that she was ignoring everything going on around her.
This toxic friendship was very discouraging; I began to wonder if I was boring or talked about myself too much. Then, I decided to distance myself to see if the friendship would go back to normal; it did not make a difference. …show more content…

While reading The Singer Solution to World Poverty written by Peter Singer, I noticed he used the term utilitarian wrong and then proceeded to define it incorrectly (851). I was irritated because I wanted to know why the writer would include a textbook term incorrectly and feel like he was in the position to define it. It came to my knowledge that he wanted to redefine the word. After doing some research, I realized he is a philosopher, so he knows the definition, but redefined the one I know. Being able to redefine word can relate to George Orwell because he believes that words have no meaning because of their lack of definition (514). I think they both would agree that the definition of any type of relationship has been redefined by social media. Being someone’s best friend used to be about sharing moments together, not about your snapstreak. The popular hashtag relationship goals is how a relationship is measured online. Social media is making users obsessed with numbers so relationships are becoming fabricated. I dream that social media will remove their forms of measurement; that way nobody would feel the need to measure friendships, relationships, or even feel the need to fit themselves to society’s …show more content…

I do not believe so, and I think that conversation is what makes us human. It opens the door to discussion and understanding, if you are open-minded. Communication leads us down the path to obtaining empathy and compassion. The Dalai Lama wrote, “The essence of compassion is a desire to alleviate the suffering of others and to promote their well-being” (14). Without conversation, we would never know what it means to be compassionate or empathetic. Stimulating conversation opens your mind to an endless world of wonder that lets you choose what you believe in. Communicating online does not fulfill this need, especially in a public
