A Dinner Party to Remember
On October 16th, 2017, 3 of the world’s most prominent authors have travel through time to have an amazing dinner party. All participants have been requested to wear their most elegant attire. Invited this formal event are the following guest: Jonathan Swift, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sor Juana Indes de La Cruz, and Lynn Hoke. The dinner party will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Augusta Georgia. Upon arrival guest met in the hotel lobby at approximately 7:15pm, where they will be served wine.
As the guest get situated, they begin to introduce themselves to one another. Lynn Hoke had arrived way before any of the other guess to come. She wore a satin blue slim evening gown with her hair elegantly pinned to the side.

From then on conversations started to flourish. But before any serious conversation started, their host, Pamela Smith go things started. She proceeded to state, “To begin, I would like to thank you all you for making the trip to 2017 to have this unforgettable dinner party. I hope time travel did not treat you guys too bad. Now, for those who are unaware, my name is Pamela Smith and I am your host for tonight.”. She proceeds to have each guess introduce themselves. The guess to start everything off is Lynn Hoke. “ Well I am glad I could be with all of you tonight, my name is Lynn Hoke and I’m a English professor at East Georgia College. I could not be more honored to be a room with so many wonderful writers. I studied and taught many of you alls work for many years.” As she finishes her introduction, Jonathan Swift prepares himself to be next. When Swift begins to rise he brushes off his coat, stands tall and then begins. “I am honored that you teach my work, it truly humbles me. My name is Jonathan Swift, I’m from Dublin, Ireland 1730. On a broad aspect I could be considered a writer but I am satirist. I have written the novel A Tale of a Tub (1704), Gulliver’s Travels (1726), and “A Modest Proposal” (1729). I attend Trinity College, I graduated with a bachelor of the arts. Thank you for listening” He then sat down pointing at Sor Juana De La Cruz to introduce herself. Wollstonecraft states “Beautiful timing on the food” Ms. Smith replies “Thank you but after all it is a dinner party, and it wouldn’t be much without the food.” De La Cruz replies “That is a valid point. Everything looks delicious.” The guesses are presented with a full dish of haricot beans, roasted chicken and steaming side of rice. As the guess commence to consume their meal Mr. Swift states, “There would not be any children cooked into this meal, now is there?”. The room became silent to the point where it was possible to hear a pin drop. Then Professor Hoke began to laugh a hardy laugh and then say “I see what you did there Mr. Swift, unfortunately we are no longer in an 18th century Ireland anymore. Therefore, there is no worry.” She sneakered. Swift laughs and then replies “Good to know that poverty has been taken care of in the 21st
Throughout Eveline Adomait and Richard Maranta’s Dinner Party Economics there is continuous discussion surrounding the problems that economies face around the world and the various methods that can be used to alter the state of the current economic conditions. Changes in consumer spending patterns can become a problem for the economy as a whole, potentially resulting in over-inflation or recession. Implementing discretionary policies such as monetary policy through changing interest rates, and fiscal policy through taxation and government spending, makes it possible to fix these economic problems.
It is a great contradiction and absurdity that a husband and father proposes the idea of cannibalism. The narrator does not want the reader to agree that the solution to overpopulation and poverty in Ireland is to eat babies; he wants the reader to see it. needs to be a practical solution. Although something seems one way to the narrator, Jonathan Swift wants. the reader to see it in the opposite light.

The issue that Swift is addressing is the fact that there are too many poor children in Dublin and that they are becoming such a huge burden for all the poor mothers or parents of the country. Swift then creates his own solution to the problem. He proposes that all poor children who are around one year of age, be cooked and eaten by the people of Dublin, preferably the poor. With this solution, he argues that it will eventually put an end to the overpopulation of the poor young children and it will satisfy the hunger for all the other people. Crazy right?
Jonathan Swift, a well-known author, in his essay “A Modest Proposal,” implies that the Irish people should eat children so that they can better their chances of survival. Swift supports his implication by describing how his proposal will have many advantages such as, eliminating papists, bringing great custom to taverns, and inducing marriages. He comes up with an absurd proposal to eat and sell the children to the elite so the Irish can have a brighter future. His purpose is to show that the Irish deserve better treatment from the English. Throughout his essay, Swift uses sarcasm, satire, and irony.
Trimalchio hosts’ a farewell dinner which is a dinner given to gladiators who were about to face wild beasts in the arena. Trimalchio is a Semitic name based on the word for “prince” and he is a high living individual. However, a well-born Roman reader would not approve of his attitudes and behavior. You get a good sense of what Trimalchio is like early on in the story when he is in the middle of talking to Menelaus and snaps his fingers for a slave to bring him a pot. When the slave brings the pot to Trimalchio he peed in it, asked for water and then used the slave’s hair to dry his hands. (19) Trimalchio had many slaves, some of their jobs were miniscule(petty) that it consisted of them standing near the dining room door and saying “right feet first!” as people enter. Not only do his slaves have (silly) jobs, they are repremended for the littlest of things. When a slave dropped a cup by mistake at dinner Trimalchio responded by saying “go kill yourself, you useless piece of trash.” (37) A well-born Roman wouldn’t appreciate how Trimalchio treats people, it is puzzling he treats them so poorly since he was once a slave himself.
I chose Akbar the Mughal Emperor, Procopius, and Thomas Aquinas as my three to attend a dinner party. I knew I wanted to write about knowledge. Originally, I wanted to include the Queen of Sheba as a member of the dinner party, but I questioned whether I would be able to include enough about this character. My first choice was Thomas Aquinas, because he focused on reason as a way to acquire knowledge. This means that knowledge is internal for him. One section in the Summa Theologica is the “Gift of Knowledge”. I also wanted to play with Aquinas’ writing style. I chose Akbar because he invited so many diverse scholars to speak about a wide array of topics. I use his character to discuss the ways we use knowledge. My final choice was Procopius. I chose Procopius instead of the Queen of Sheba, so I could bring up how we present our knowledge and how our knowledge evolves. Procopius wrote The Secret History and the History of the Wars. These works have alternate views of Justinian, that evolved with events during that time period. My goal is to find a conclusion from these about the value of knowledge, how knowledge is used, and how knowledge is presented.
The table is set and the aroma of herbed chicken, buttered cheddar rolls and sweet corn risotto fills the air. This dinner party is going to be one to be remembered! I have chosen to invite three very special people to dine with my Husband and I. They each have been chosen for a very specific reason. The people I chose are; Abraham Lincoln, Mary of Bethany, and Truly Wright. The evening will be one of enlightening and enjoyment as we get to learn and converse with these amazing individuals.
Jonathan Smith goes to extreme measures to explain his new plan to raise the economic wellbeing of his country. He explains what age is too young and what age is too old, in order to eat the tenants children when they are at their prime juiciness. He also gives a list of suggestions on how to cook them, ?A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled, and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout.? All of this talk about eating children comes as a surprise because previous to this disturbing suggestion, Swift is ironically discussing the plight of starving beggars in Ireland. The reader is unprepared for the solution that he suggests.
All though he kept the use of them limited, a use of sympathy for the children by going into detail of how the children will be prepared and eaten. “A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends; and when the family dines alone, the fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned with a little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day, especially in winter” (A Modest Proposal). The audience is made to feel Swift’s irritation at the situation and his unyielding attempts to relieve Ireland of the problems of the poor with his statement, But, as to myself, having been wearied out for many years with offering vain, idle, visionary thoughts, and at length utterly despairing of success, (A Modest Proposal). Swift was fed up with the rich ignoring the situation he did the only thing he thought he could do, wrote a proposal that would shock his audience into seeing the situation for what it was,
Humor can come in many different forms. Many people are aware of the blatant humor of slapstick, but it takes a keener mind to notice the subtle detail in sarcasm or satire. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift was able to create a piece of literature addressing the faults of the Irish culture while embedding in a humorous essay. Swift’s satire allows for the gravity of the Irish standings to be exploited under the disguise of a proposal for economic benefit.
During Swift’s time, English land-lords owned much of the land in Ireland. These affluent Englishmen practiced feudalism in which they employed the Irish to tend to their fields. The English, however, forced high taxes upon the Irish workers. This system prevented the Irish from obtaining much profit, which in turn forced the workers to face an endless cycle of poverty. The majority of the families in Ireland were subject to this system, which resulted in the great issue of the families not being able to care for their children after establishing this precedent; swift introduces his satirical proposal of transforming the burden of childcare into a profitable affair. Swift proposes the Irish market their children to be eaten. Swift suggests that this system will boost the Irish by giving families money in their pockets as well as an end to Ireland’s famine by introducing a new food source. Throughout Swift’s proposal, he presents multiple benefits from his system and how it will cause Ireland to prosper. Parties can range from house warming parties, to birthday parties, holiday parties, engagement parties, etc. You can even throw parties just to have fun. Find a reason to celebrate, whether it is a holiday, a special occasion, an achievement, a big announcement, a new endeavor, a job well done or a journey completed. The reason you are partying will set the tone.
All of those who are invited are well educated people who are looked highly upon due to their occupation. During the first dinner we see specific people who attend like the Medical Man, Psychologist, Mayor, the Very Young man, Filby and the narrator, all of these people are educated as we can tell by their conversations. From the first dinner to the second, the people who return include the Psychologist, the Medical Man, and the Narrator. Although we don’t know much about the narrator we know that the Psychologist, who is the master of the the brain and the Medical Man who is the master of the body, hold great importance in this society, proving that the time traveler himself also holds a fairly high stature. At this point in the book it’s key to notice the social class that the time traveler comes from, keeping in mind that it will play a key role as the book
Traveling around the world can open your eyes to many new discoveries. Jonathan Swift was a well-known author during the 1600 and 1700’s. Many of Swift’s pieces were based on his experiences during his travels. “For most general readers, the name Jonathan Swift is associated only with his satiric masterpiece Gulliver's Travels. They are not aware that, in addition to it and hundreds of poems, he wrote a great deal of nonfictional prose, much of it of considerable interest, significance, and excellence” (Schakel).
