Dave Pelzer’s book “A Child Called ‘It’” told his story of growing up in an abusive household. Pelzer’s family at first was just like any other, his parents loved each other and their children and they would do many fun activities together. As time progressed a change happened and his mother began to always punish Pelzer rather than any of the other children. The small punishments soon began to grow and become more and more serious. Soon, Dave’s father and siblings could not help him out of fear that their mother and wife would turn on them. Dave was banished to the garage where he would have to sit at the bottom of the stairs waiting until his mother called him to do his chores. Usually Pelzer would be starved for very long periods of time and if he didn’t finish the chores in time, he would be punished. Pelzer began to steal food from the kids in his class, but was soon caught, this did not go unpunished by his mother. Eventually, after coming to school in the same clothes everyday with bruises and a stab wound, the staff of his school finally freed Dave from his mother. ...ause it was about the abuse Pelzer experienced but it was a good learning opportunity. The book opened my eyes to something I had never imagined. I have heard about child abuse, but actually reading a firsthand account of all the terrible things that Dave Pelzer experienced made me realize it is much more of a problem than I so often think. I believe the story was well written, it is as if Dave was writing it as he experienced those things so the language was very easy to understand and the book did not take long to read. I liked that the book opened with Dave Pelzer being taken away from his mother so the reader knows right from the start that Dave will be okay and taken out of the situation. I also enjoyed Pelzer writing the epilogue after it was all over and telling the reader about his son so we knew he was okay and was free from the abuse once and for all.
