Our bodies are made up of millions of cells. These cells constantly grow and divide in an organized way to produce even more cells as they are needed. This helps to keep the body healthy. When cells become either damaged or old, they die and are then replaced with new cells. However sometimes, like in the above picture, this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material, also known as DNA, of a cell can become damaged, resulting in the production of mutations that have an effect on normal cell growth and division. When something like this happens, the cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body isn’t in need. Then, the extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor. *Defining cancer: What is it and how does it work ? Cancer is a word used for diseases in which irregular cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Unlike normal cells, these irregular cancer cells never stop reproducing after they have doubled. Meaning that one cancer cell will continue to double over and over again. Basically one cell becomes 2, then 4, then 8, then 16 and so on....and now times that by the thousands of cancer cells within a single cancer tumor Not only do cancer cells reproduce at a unstoppable rate, but they can spread to different parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Mutations in progenitor cells would not be transmitted too far as they have limited replication and proliferation ability. Thus, the growth of the tumors will be limited. Hence, if there is even a very small population of cells with the ability to proliferate continuously, there will be a source for productions of more cells for the tumor. Cancer is the term used to describe a group of diseases consisting of hundreds of ailments and although there exists so many different types of cancer, they all begin in a similar way. Cancer starts when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. Cancer cell growth is different from normal cell growth. Instead of dying, cancer cells continue to grow and form new, abnormal cells. Cancer cells can also invade (grow into) other tissues, something that normal cells cannot do. Growing out of control and invading other tissues are what makes a cell a cancer cell. Cells become cancer cells because of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) damage. DNA is in every cell and it directs all the cell’s actions. In a normal cell, when DNA gets damaged the cell either repairs the damage or the cell dies. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired, and the cell doesn’t die like it should. Instead, the cell goes on making new cells that the body doesn’t need. These new cells all have the same abnormal DNA as the first cell does.

Tumors are formed by the alteration of the body’s own cells. This can be caused by environmental factors such as radiation, like UV exposure, chemicals or viruses 1. These can disrupt genes that control growth and cause an increase in cell division and proliferation. Proto-oncogenes are those genes that control normal but essential cell processes that keep cell growth and death in check. Two important categories are apoptosis genes, which regulate cell death, and tumor suppressor genes, which decrease cell propagation 1 . If these genes were mutated to the point where they cannot produce a functioning protein, cell division would continue far past what it was supposed to and unhealthy cells would be allowed to live and continue to multiply.
