SAS states that Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured – that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis. But it’s not the amount of data that’s important. It is what organizations do with the data that matters. Big data can be analyzed for insights that lead to better decisions and strategic business moves. They also describe big data into five categories. The categories are Volume, Velocity, Variety, Variability, and Complexity. Volume is all the data from different sources being collected. Velocity is the speed that data is collected basically soon as someone posts or looks something up. Variety is described as the different ways the data comes in such as text documents or audio/video. (SAS,2017) Wendy’s uses big data like most companies and other fast food restaurants. A big one is tracking peoples’ movements. After analyzing where people are going and where they have been they use this information to place advertising and new store locations. Another big data strategy would be finding out what people are searching. By finding out what people are looking for you can find out peoples’ interests and dislikes to tailor your ads and marketing campaign to better suit the audience or demographic you are looking for. Big data can be very dangerous. With the Equifax hack recently, millions of peoples’ personal information was leaked. People do not think about what would happen if Wendy’s was hacked or data was leaked. Peoples credit card information would be lost and emails which can be traced to people and used to unlock other important information about you. Forbs magazine did a big data cost analysis and came up with some numbers. A petabyte Hadoop cluster will require between 125 and 250 nodes which costs around $1 million and the cost of a supported Hadoop distribution will have similar annual costs of $4,000 per node
