Part time job is something not so strange for American students, as students have been taking up extra jobs to fund their private needs for a long time. However, this does not mean there is no debate about the advantages and disadvantages of part-time job. Some says that having a part time job will reduce students’ score at school and may lead to stress in life. In “Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go For it?,” Dennis Mclellan argues that part-time job can actually help students a lot if it is done moderately. Personally, I agree with his idea: part time job can give learn how to be independent and find their own paths into lives thanks to part-time job. Many students these days have no idea what they want to do and their future jobs are determined by social trends or families, not by their dreams and abilities. Many grow up having to do the jobs that they hate and become unhappy in life. For that reason students should try out the jobs they want to have first before deciding that they will make that job their dream job. And the best way to do so is to have part-time jobs. If a student finds that he or she loves working in a clothing store, maybe he or she would want to pursue a career in fashion. In the article, Shelley Staats also claimed that her work was providing her some experience for her future job. Staats used to be a secretary for a Century 21 office, cashier for a marine products, and worked in the department store etc.. She has taken many kinds of part-time jobs. Finally, she found out that she was really interested in fashion industry and wanted to work in fashion merchandising in her future. Therefore, through working various part-time jobs, students will learn what they are looking for and what they are not looking for in a career. Things will be easier for them comparing to others: they know what path to take and what will they do, unlike many who will struggle with the majors they do not like in school and the job they do not like in
