The word ergonomics was created through simply putting two Greek words together. “Ergo” meaning work and “nomics” meaning laws. However, in present time, ergonomics refers to the study of people’s condition at their workplace, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Ergonomics is something us humans deal with on a daily basis, whether it is at work or at home. Although ergonomics might not seem as an important factor to consider, it can significantly affect people’s working efficiency. Maintaining good ergonomics is also very important for people’s health and safety. Study proves that extended time spent on a computer can induce muscular fatigue and discomfort. Most common injuries people suffer due to bad ergonomics are often, musculoskeletal injury also known as MSI. Along with MSI, another very popular discomfort people suffer is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This includes, but is not restricted to; eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, burning eyes and many more, but the most common and severe MSD’s are tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and even muscle strain. The three main reasons why people experience MSD’s are because of constant repetitive, awkward, and forceful movements in the body. These problems will occur due to an ineffective workplace and ergonomics helps us eliminate these potential harmful injuries.

Conclusion:
Nonetheless, in today’s society, ergonomics has emerged as a popular issue because it shows the relationship between certain types of injuries such as MSI and MSD. In addition to this, it shows how the potential injuries relate to everyday situations in the workplace. A few ways to avoid getting these injuries from the workplace, is by following the Canadian Center of occupation checklist, as provided. To avoid most of these injuries consider the type of chair you sit on, proper lighting, work area, the positing of the body and well as the monitor. Nevertheless, an ineffective workplace will cause many problems to the user and ergonomics helps us eliminate these harmful potential injuries.
...signed job, supported by a well-designed workplace and proper tools, allows the worker to avoid unnecessary motion of the neck, shoulders and upper limbs. Meaning the actual performance of the tasks depends on individuals. Make sure to always observe the workplace. If it looks like it’s an unfit workplace and you can easily get injured. Walk away. There is nothing better than to make sure that your job and health are okay when it comes to the workplace. Great ergonomics means great Workplace.

The leading cause of injury to nursing and hospital staff is the repeated manual lifting, and lifting and transferring of patients. This increasing incident rates cost to healthcare organizations. “Safe Patient Handling” programs have become one of the top initiatives for healthcare organizations. With the help of this program, work-related injuries and injuries due to patient falls can be reduced. Hill-Rom’s high technologies, processes, and tools assist hospitals to enhance outcomes for patients.
In a society becoming burdened by both active and sedentary work, the consequences of overuse injuries, back and neck pain, and weight gain are inevitable. In order to protect the well-being of workers and improve their overall quality of life, the implementation of ergonomic strategies in the workplace is becoming increasingly popular. It is commonly believed that work-related physical symptoms were not addressed in writing until the mid-1800s, but it must be recognized that ergonomics has crucial roots in the practices of Ancient Greece. With changing philosophies throughout history, designers have built on Greek construction methods, work regulations, and tools to improve the comfort, safety, and efficacy associated with working.
Safety is a primary concern in the health care environment, but there are still many preventable errors that occur. In fact, a study from ProPublica in 2013 found that between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year suffer preventable harm in the hospital (Allen, 2013). Safety in the healthcare environment is not only keeping the patient safe, but also the employee. If a nurse does not follow procedure, they could bring harm to themselves, the patient, or both. Although it seems like such a simple topic with a simple solution, there are several components to what safety really entails. Health care professionals must always be cautious to prevent any mishaps to their patients, especially when using machines or lifting objects, as it has a higher
The Regulations set out a framework to help employers avoid or reduce the risk of injury resulting from manual handling activities. The basic principle is that where manual handling of loads, which involves a risk of injury (particularly to the back) is present, the employer must take measures to avoid or reduce the need for such manual handling.
Although some studies now show that improved ergonomic designs in the workplace can ease problems accompanying decreased muscular strength, the most that can be offered at this time are proactive health and strength measures to delay the onset of decreased productivity.
Computers are being used for many different reasons all across the world. Computers are used in the work place for documentation and to keep records of clients. The question that will be answered is how does the computer monitor affect an individual during use? The anatomy of the human eye will be addressed to give the reader a better understanding of how light travels through the eye. Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as (CVS), is an effect of gazing into a monitor for long periods of time, and will be discussed to give the reader a clear illustration of the negative effects of the computer monitor. Computer monitors are used in everywhere in many types of lighting, and workplace lighting is an example that will be discussed. The factors that contribute to CVS will be discussed, the symptoms, and finally ways to prevent CVS will be addressed so that the reader will be aware of what can happen if they are sitting in front of a computer for a long duration.
Employers have many health and safety responsibilities such as; Employer’s should decide what could cause you harm in your job and the things that they can do to stop that from happening. This could be by fixing a chair that you sit in regularly that you have reported to not be adequate for supporting your back, it is their responsibility to listen and act on your complaint for your safety. It is also their responsibility to ensure that you do not pay any money for the chair to be fixed or to buy a new one. They must provide you with any equipment/protective clothing free of charge. This ensures that even the staff on the lowest of wages do not have to choose between personal necessities or their safety. Employers should always explain who is responsible for the health and safety in your workplace and who you should report any incidents to clearly, this person will be responsible for keeping up to date records on any incidents and reporting any major incidents, injuries or diseases to the incident contact centre. Employers must insure that they consult with staff and this person regularly to address any potential hazards in the workplace and come to a solution that will prevent incidents from happening.
In this report, I will outline the main factors in having a safe workstation. There are certain ways in which you may choose an ergonomically correct chair. Does the seat feel comfortable and fit your shape? When you sit in the chair the seat should be at least one inch wider than your hips and thighs on either side.

Long working hours continue to be one of the largest health concerns in the world. Currently, the world population has become so busy due to the pressure from harsh economic conditions. People are therefore spending long working hours in the workplace, which is an aspect that has negative impact on their health conditions. Statistics from Working Condition Survey indicates that approximately 30% of workers residing in European Union believe that their health is at risk due to the hours they spent in the workplace (Gurung, 2010:16)
The American Academy of Paediatrics has expressed concern about the amount of time children spend in front of various types of screens, and several experts in eye development have stated that computer use is creating problems in children developing visual systems. (Healy 1998, p.18)
