Skydiving Reflection Paper

895 Words2 Pages

The second half of the course was focused on practicing the rhetorical techniques that we learned from the first half of the quarter. As we approached to the Rhetoric-in-Practice Essay and Project (RIP), I decided to choose a different topic from the RA Paper. When we wrote the RIP ideas, I did research for a few topics. The topic that I initially wanted to write was sport shoes, but when we had the discussion in class, Professor Meghdadi brought a good point that many people already have sport shoes. Therefore, I wrote about the other topic that I had in mind, skydiving. When I started to write about the RIP Proposal Draft, I realized skydiving is a difficult topic to write because I did not understand this topic well, and I was struggling …show more content…

Professor Meghdadi also commented that I did not define a narrowed audience. The struggles in the process of writing the RIP almost led me to switch to a different topic because I was confused about the prompt and the requirements that I need to meet. Thankfully, I gained a better understanding of this assignment after Professor Meghdadi provided us an outline of the RIP Essay, and went over a few essays of my peers to give us an idea of his expectations. As I completed my second draft, I also received helpful suggestions from my peers, Franklin, Ethan, and Yi-Ling. One of the comments from Ethan was about the money issue that prevents people to try skydiving (Figure-15). When I did the final draft, I provided solutions to solve the money issue. One of the example that I used was that if individuals can cut down 30 cups of coffee from Starbucks, they can save enough of money to try skydiving (Figure-16). The process of developing the RIP Essay clearly showed me the importance of communication with peers. Without the help from my classmates, I would not be able to finish this assignment with a high quality of work. However, if I can redo this assignment, I would include a graphic of car accidents that happened each year and also more details …show more content…

The presentations were meant to test the knowledge that we gained from the assignments that we did throughout the quarter. For the presentation, I used what learned from the Rhetorical Analysis, which I incorporated the use of pathos, logos and ethos. The RIP essay that we did was solid reference for the presentation. However, I also wrote a transcript to organize and plan my presentation. The process of creating the PowerPoint was not complicated because most of the information were drawn from the RIP essay. After creating a PowerPoint, I practiced a couple of time in front of a mirror and also presented to my friend. The most important slide of the PowerPoint was the “So What” slide because it shows the purpose of this presentation (Figure-17). On the day of the presentation, I was not as nervous as I thought I would be. I believe it was because of the individual and group presentation that we did over the quarter. Overall, I enjoined this experience, and I appreciated the comments from Professor Meghdadi because they are the key to help me to become a better presenter. If I would be able to present again, I would move around instead of standing near the podium. I would also work on memorizing the materials rather than reading it off from my note
