The article “Why Americans Hate the Media” takes a look at how the media has taken their journalistic duties to another level that does not promote the ideas and questions that the American citizens whom the journalist report to are concerned about. The media has found a way to keep their ratings and the hype of politics alive by sensationalizing hot-bed issues. In Chapter fourteen, page 405 of the textbook “American Government Roots and Reform” it states that “narrowcasting---targeting media programming at specific populations within society” (Yanus) this course of action prompts audiences and listeners to find the media source that relates to what view you have traditionally through family and background beliefs. Analyzing how the media reported President Clinton’s State of the Union address, the difference in what the media reports and what American citizens want to hear, and the YouTube example of the style of reporting that the media utilizes will be the goal of this essay.
“Why Americans Hate the Media” discussed a point of the media not focusing on the issues of the country but more on the politician. Hardball with Chris Matthews is a leading cable news show and provides vast amounts of “Infotainment-or TV programming that blends political news and information with entertainment” (Yanus) throughout the program there is comedy, cartoons, political expert analysts, and political theatrics whose focus is on promoting a biased view of greatness of the current administration and Hillary Clinton. Although the show is entertaining and can draw the most novice democrat and political fan up to the most expert democrat and political fan again it does not promote the issues that the American citizens are concerned about. However, Hardball does promote what the average reporter would consider their journalistic duty. “Why Americans Hate the Media” reported the reporter Mike Wallace as saying” “No,” Wallace said flatly and immediately. “You don’t have a higher duty. No. No. You’re a reporter!” The media is saying that they are not called to be ethical, promote the country they live in positively, nor are they responsible for the atmosphere that they create with the way the media spins a story, or a person’s life.
