A cohort is a group of people who are the same age or belong to the same age group. Baby Boomers are those who were born from 1946 to 1964 post World War II. Baby boomers are actually thought to represent two specific cohorts. The “leading edge” cohort is comprised of those who were born from 1946-1954. Those in this category were greatly affected by the Vietnam War whereas the “trailing edge” cohort was “less embroiled in antiwar causes” (Morgan, Kunkel, & Morgan, 2011, p. 273-274). Those in these age classifications are close to, or at retirement age. “Baby boomers are seeking to retool for the ever-changing job market and to expand their intellectual horizons,” (Morgan, Kunkel, & Morgan, 2011, p. 289-290) The term non-traditional student has been redefined as the baby boomers flood colleges across the nation. “The very phrase lifelong learning speaks volumes about the integration of education across the life course.
