Mr. Teesdale Isabel Williams-SOC 110-September 14, 2016 Written Assignment One What makes sociology different? Sociology is the study of the human society from outside the person, while psychology is what happens to the person within them. Sociology affects your life in many ways that many outside factors contribute to . The greatest sociological factors are often outside of our control, but have large impacts on the way we behave, view society and ourselves. Whether it is the frustration with our teammates, controversy due to what other people believe in and what their religion is. The constraints of our lives also come into factor because we aren’t all equal. All of these societal factors impact our everyday lives. I can only improve …show more content…
Money and education are some of the biggest restraints I have. Money really affects people’s lives because you can’t just get a new car to fit into what other people have and you can’t go on trips with others due to money. Many can’t go on trips because they don’t have the money to spare. It has to go to other necessities that are needed, like a house and food. Society encourages all people to be up to date and have the best things possible. This isn’t possible though because not everyone has an equal income or the same amount knowledge. I am affected by this because I can’t go to all of the big trips with others to experience other places. Education is the next factor for me. I am not able to go to college right away because I have to finish where I am at right now. People may not be able to pursue the education to get a better job due to money already being short. I am currently not able to further my education into becoming a certified nursing aid because of my location and time restraints. Society believes that everyone should go to college no matter what. This doesn’t work out because many don’t want to go to college and they don’t want to give up the money they could make in the time they go to college. This is the opportunity cost of going to
During the age of Pericles, the ideal form of government was believed to be a government formed by all of the citizens regardless of wealth or social standing. This was known as democracy, literally meaning “ government of the people” [Document 3.] This government favored the many instead of the few. Athens was a direct democracy, meaning every citizen participated in debates. Western civilization used this philosophy of government by many, and created an indirect democracy where citizens elect officials to make and enforce laws.

During the archaic and classical periods (ca 800-323 BCE), Ancient Greece consisted of several hundred poleis or “city states.” Each polis was its own small country. Many of these were no more than small towns or even Villages which controlled sometimes very small territories. At the opposite end of this spectrum were the two largest, most powerful and ultimately most influential Greek city states, Athens and Sparta. Politically, they were opposites of each other.
In ancient Greece, the Greeks lived in city-states as to each of their own and there was no central government at that time. Each city-state has their own culture, made their own laws, and their own monetary system. As a result, Greece was made up of many city-states such as Corinth, Athens and Sparta. Thereafter, each city-state formed their own government according to their preferences: monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy.
Sociology is something I didn’t know about until I took this class. This class introduced sociology to me. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink. Sociology is “the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior, from large-scale institutions and mass culture to small groups and individual interactions” (Ferris and stein 2014: p9). Sociology is not something you just learn when you are just born. You learn about sociology throughout your life. Sociology is displayed around things such as being around different environments, friends, and family. Education is a sociology idea that can examine a person’s class and schooling. The higher the education you have,
Thus began the Age of Pericles, the period of Greek history when Pericles ruled Athens. Under Pericles, Athens went through a period that has become known as the Golden Age of Athens (480-404) B.C. Athens developed a more democratic form of government that gave power to those who were Athenian. These rights did not apply to women or slaves. In 490 B.C, the Athenians defeated Persian invades at the Battle of Marathon. In 480 B.C. Xerxes the First, the Emperor of the Persians, (c.519- 465) B.C, and a large Persian force attempted to even the score. In the battle of Thermopylae, The Persian’s outnumbered the Spartans. The Persians then marched to Athens for revenge. The Greeks defeated the Persian Navy at the battle of Salamis that same year proved to be turning point in the conflict and Xerxes withdrew most of his men in Asia. The finale battle of the Persian War was near Plataea in 479 B.C with Greeks winning. In 477 B.C, the Delian League was formed. The members were Greek city-states, who band together to protect themselves against future threats by the Persian Empire. In 461, Pericles, the leader of the Athenian Democratic Party, became ruler of Athens. After Pericles death, the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta raged on for almost three decades (Pericles).
Ancient Greece was established in about 800 BC and its end is acknowledged to be in 146 BC when it got conquered by the Romans and became part of their empire. (Ducksters) Throughout its reign, the Greeks were able to expand their empire to rule much of Europe and Western Asia. They were also a very accomplished civilization. For example, one of the first democracies and republics were developed in Athens and Sparta, respectively. In fact, the Ancient Greek civilization is what formed the foundation of most of the modern Western culture. They were able to influence everything from science, art, mathematics, literature, government, philosophy and also sports. Overall, the Ancient Greeks formed a very impressive culture and one of their noted areas of achievement is art, pottery in
How did people in Athens and Sparta obtain the right to participate in public life and make decisions affecting the community?
Sociology is the study of the relationships that humans have with each other and social institutions. It aims to understand the links that exist between individuals and the social structures around them and also the functions that these social institutions perform in society.
After reviewing the article titles given for this first assignment, I believe they indicate that Sociology, generally speaking, is not only a study of diversity or commonality in traits among people; it is also a science about factors in a person’s life and how these factors culminate responses. Interestingly enough, its topics of concern seem to be directly determined by current and common events of the world. Through the invention and expansion of new ideas, popular trends and fashions through time, Sociology adapts to responsibly to service the very subjects of interest it studies; for, even the slightest change of a person’s daily experience can have an insurmountable impact on attitude, personal growth, family dynamics and basic group behavior.
Without these different social sciences and scientists that study them, people may not know how the world really works. Scientists look into events that could potentially give ideas of why something became the way that it is. Sociological perspective also gives insight into why someone might be the way that they are. It is important for everyone to have a sociologist’s perspective because this means that, instead of judging someone only because of how another person see them the first time, that person would be able to try to find a deeper meaning and not be too quick to judge. Another thing that is important for people to have is sociological imagination. Sociological imagination gives a person the ability to see a connection between their own world and the bigger world. This is important so that a person could see how much they impact the world or how the world impacts
Sociologists develop theories to explain and analyze society at different levels and from different perspectives. Sociologists study everything from the micro level of analysis of small social patterns to the “big picture” which is the macro level of analysis of large social patterns.
I think everyone should ask themselves what is sociology? I believe that sociology is the scientific study of social behavior or society, including its origins, development, organization, networks, and institutions. This is a huge topic to cover. Sociology explains the way people act and think, based on
To Quote Anthony Giddens: "Sociology is the study of human social life, groups and societies. It is a dazzling and compelling enterprise, having as its subject matter our own behaviour as social beings. The scope of sociology is extremely wide, ranging from the analysis of passing encounters between individuals in the street up to the investigation of world-wide social processes“(1989). Gidden’s statement describes sociology as a study that helps us understand our own behaviour as human beings in a social word. Sociologist study everything from the interaction between people in the street to the interaction between different countries. Sociologists aim to study how societies have changed over, how societies are structured and organized, the norms of society. It’s also important to understand that not all sociologists agree with each other, Sociologists often debate with one another to prove/disprove certain theories and concepts. By studying Sociology is it helps us analyze social conflicts on a micro and macro scope. Through a macro level, we can study large-scale social organization and large social categories it also examinees social processes and patterns society as a whole. We can analyze individuals much deeper on a micro level. This way we study a human by face-to face interactions. Its important as humans to understand the way our society came together and the reasons to how elements work and function together. Sociology gives us a deeper
Many people would query what is sociology for and why should anyone care about it. Self-enlightenment and an increased self-understanding can be delivered from thinking sociologically. It makes individuals aware of culture and diversity and that there is not just one type of society. Social sciences are seen as not dependable or academically stimulating as natural sciences. But as Goodall & Oswald cites, ‘what principally matters is whether social scientists are doing their job of helping humans to understand the world and improve life’.
