A “True” Hero
Is a hero universal, or are they subject to individual judgment? As a generalization, heroes are subject to the whims of a society. Consequently, a hero is bent and altered in relation to the mentalities of a culture. In extreme cases, a man who kills a murderer may be a hero in one culture, while in the geographical area only a few miles away; he could be viewed as a person equally as evil. Therefore, heroes will vary from culture to culture and can best be defined by their cultural origins, or an additional method of hero determination referred to as the hero’s Journey—a 12-part journey that a majority of hero stories use.
Japan is a culture that is vastly different from cultures described as western. (Europe The Americas, Australia) Since World War 2, Japan has rapidly grown in technology, borrowing from western culture but largely remaining unique to its rich heritage. With Japan’s rapid industrialization has come a reliance on technology. Though they do have a variety of interesting literature, in their history as the latter part of the 20th century passed, and the twenty first century began, Japanese culture revolved primarily around technology. Visual novels were indeed poplar, but electronic forms of media were the primeval form of story telling. The inevitable consequence of this was that the “hero” in Japanese culture was best represented in technology, technology like videogames. One such game that reflects both the hero’s Journey and Japanese cultural beliefs, is the third release in the Metal Gear Solid Series that was written and directed by Hideo Kojima.

...ey, the hero experiences a resurrection of sorts. In this phase, he reflects on the past events and how they changed him. Snake enacts this as he, in a final moment, confronts his former mentor and overcomes her, symbolizing the completion of his goal and the end of his development. Finally, in the conclusion of everything, the hero returns with that that he had sought after, giving the journey meaning. Snake enacts this with his return. Upon which he is handsomely decorated and given his mentors position.
Thus, Snake fills the cultural requirements as well as the hero’s journey template. As such he can safely be considered a “hero” in a critical light. The Metal Gear Solid series is a masterpiece directed by Hideo Kojima, and produced by Konami. It is an excellently written story that will keep its observers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
Much of what is considered modern Japan has been fundamentally shaped by its involvement in various wars throughout history. In particular, the events of World War II led to radical changes in Japanese society, both politically and socially. While much focus has been placed on the broad, overarching impacts of war on Japan, it is through careful inspection of literature and art that we can understand war’s impact on the lives of everyday people. The Go Masters, the first collaborative film between China and Japan post-WWII, and “Turtleback Tombs,” a short story by Okinawan author Oshiro Tatsuhiro, both give insight to how war can fundamentally change how a place is perceived, on both an abstract and concrete level.

The definition of “hero” could possibly be the broadest characteristic or title to grant a human being. Many cultures throughout the history of the Earth have created their own ideas about how a hero should behave and live his life. Although past cultures have been different, the traits of a hero in each civilization are coincidentally analogous with each other. Possessing a warlike and barbaric essence, Beowulf, the protagonist of the only Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, was praised as a leader and hero by the citizens of surrounding lands in northern Europe. Although not seen as a barbarian, Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States, was praised for his brilliant plans and resourceful thinking during times of hardship. Despite being from contrasting societies, Abraham Lincoln and Beowulf were both glorified for their heroic actions, but for different reasons.
We expect heroes to be someone who will go above and beyond the call of duty and to be the first to react at the face of danger. But a hero to one may be an enemy to another. Is there a way to differentiate these heroes so that there is a clear divide that qualifies a person to be a hero? In the following epics, Njal’s Saga and The Nibelugenlied, Gunnar and Siegfried respectively, are portrayed as protagonist characters who display acts of heroism to settle arguments. Because of their glorified heroic feats, they both become blind-sided, unaware that their acts subsequently level them to what one would consider an enemy. A hero is not supposed to be selfish in the least bit. These books fabricate these men as heroes, convincing readers that they use their superhuman abilities to protect society from violence; ultimately, they do this to protect their reputation and masculinity.

In the popular culture of America we can find many reflections of the heroic figure; in writing, in the graphic art of comic books, and most certainly in the aftermath of September 11th, heroes are ever present. Our cultural champions speak to our collective need to make sense of the nonsensical and to establish order in both our external and internal worlds. Throughout history, there have always been heroes. Those strong-willed, brave individuals who perform courageous acts for fame and glory are prevalent in most cultures.. Societies have these heroes as standards of their cultures’ moral codes. Every society has their own definition of these codes are, so a unifying definition of hero can be hard to achieve. However, Philip Zimbardo says “Simply put, then, the key to heroism is a concern for other people in need—a concern to defend a moral cause, knowing there is a personal risk, done without expectation of reward.” With this basic definition, I will be examining various epic heroes I’ve studied throughout the course of my senior year for characteristics. From the copious amounts of studying, I’ve deduced that Achilles, Odysseus, Aeneas, Socrates, Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and Arthur all have characteristics that make them heroic.

Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis.
