What is the value of education? Honestly you can never put a real price on education. Education is something that is needed to survive in today’s world. Education is something that is more than just what the books show us. In my classroom we will not be looking at dates, names, or Jeopardy facts, but we will be looking at the human experience. Students will be exploring their identity and the world they live in now. That is the importance of the social sciences. They help us see where the world is now and why. We often fear the social sciences because of dates and facts, but we forget their importance. They are set out to teach us who we are and how we will become. In order for this to be successful we need to come together as a class, and strive for success. If I am to be successful as a teacher I need to have an arsenal of tools to help me. If I ignore these tools I will be doomed to fail my students. In order to do this I need to take on many ideas that have been gifted to me as a teacher and those tools are the caring professional, learning for understanding, and look at various communities for learning. …show more content…
I need to look at my student through a “Blind veil of Ignorance” as said by John Rawls. What I mean by that is not ignoring the student, but I need to see them through their eyes as well as mine. I need to overcome my own thoughts and biasness to see their views. What I may see as mundane or simple could be the task of a lifetime for that student. I need to be ready to adjust by learning who my students are. I need also live in the mind set embracing the golden rule and that is respect. Education remains a cornerstone for society as it has for decades. Technology advances, the economy fluctuates, and politics change, but education remains, not only important but imperative for personal and social growth. Yet, as important as it is touted to be, the quality and purpose of learning is often lost in the assembly-line, manufactured process of education that exists today.
Not one single person on earth can explain why they are where they are in life in a single sentence. I used to think that I would just take a year off of school after I graduated from college. Maybe I would explore or just work a lot and save up some money so I could have a little more freedom in life. Whatever it was, I was not quite sure yet, I just really did not want to be in school for a while. Well, my plans changed when everyone I knew was telling me not to do that because I would most likely not go back. I also saw friends that were older than I was take that break, and then regret it when all of their friends were graduating without them. I changed my mind pretty quickly after hearing about and witnessing their mistakes and decided to go to college right out of high school after all. But after attending Shasta College for just a few weeks, I realized that I actually liked going to school. I found a whole new love for learning. I actually enjoyed soaking up information and learning from my professors. Looking back on my life, I'm so glad that my little idea of not going to college for a while was out weighed by all of the reasons that did cause me to go. My primary group which consists of my family and my boyfriend, the way I view myself, and the values that I hold close to me all greatly affected my decision to attend Shasta College.

The last tenant to my philosophy of education that relates to classism in the classroom is to not single out one class represented in my classroom. I will work individually and collaborate to change classroom and school practices that downgrade our students. If I see a student in need or struggling I will work with them one on one to help them complete the assignment or learn a specific subject. If a student comes to me with a concern I will speak to them individually and then speak with the class as a whole to collaborate the situation. No student in my classroom will be hurt or discouraged because of the background and class they come from. Instead we will work out situations and treat everyone with equal respect.
Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn. My educational ethics toward each student will be to emphasise that everyone is an individual, they are all special and unique in their own way, and that every student does not learn on the same level. I hope my students will treat each other the way they want to be treated, and respect those that may be less fortunate.
I try imparting into them the importance of an education and how they contribute to the growth of our society. In my classroom, I am in control. I draw a clear line between what and how much my students are allowed to do in the classroom. In the first week of school, I establish my authority and I clearly and explicitly express my classroom and outside the classroom procedures that will be followed and the rights that every student has in the classroom. Some examples, all students have the right to learn, all students have a right to be heard, and all students have a right to be respected. There are consequences for those that chose not to abide. To begin, we need to understand the nature of students. The nature of students varies between individuals. The majority of students are well-behaved and come to school ready to learn. Part of this is due to the way they have been raised, but most students are basically good. There is a small percent of students whose nature, it seems, is to make everyone miserable. I do not know if this is because of a difficult childhood at home or because the student just likes to be the center of attention. Either way, there are always students that will give their teachers a hard time. I guess this is their nature. Every individual is different, therefore, the nature of the students I will teach some day will be different depending on their background and other various things that may happen to them as they grow up. For example, a student that has lost a sibling due to an illness or accident, may become very bitter throughout life. The nature of this student’s behavior which is being shaped by this may make this student a cold-hearted and mean student. These are the students that teachers need to spend extra time with and try to make them feel loved, no matter how hard this may be. I, as a future teacher, need to look at students and try to help them out no matter how difficult that may be.
Jaime Escalante, a great educator, once said, “The teacher gives us the desire to learn, the desire to be Somebody.” As a teacher, my goal will be to show students that each of them can be whatever they want to be, and not only are they capable of being good at what they do, they can be the best. To reach this goal, I must be an effective teacher, which I believe can best be accomplished by teaching in a way that is comfortable for me. Therefore, I will not base my classroom around one single philosophy; I am going to seek comfort by utilizing certain aspects of different educational philosophies, namely essentialism, existentialism, progressivism, and social reconstructionism.
The most important rule that I believe in is that my classroom should be a place of learning. The best way to create this type of environment is to make sure that I am consistent with all students and that I make the students feel comfortable and relaxed. I believe that students learn more in a consistent relaxed atmosphere, because all students need to know that what’s wrong for one is wrong for all and what is right for one is right for all. I want my students to be comforted in the feeling that they are all on equal footing when they step into my classroom.
Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
Education has value to me today. Without education I would not be where I am today, feeling the way I do about myself, and doing what I love the most.
