While many people believe immigration to the UK is okay others feel it is wrong because they believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Immigration has had a positive effect by increasing employment options for employers. Immigrant unemployment rates are lower than the average. Immigration can be the key to opening the global market. Immigrants help meet the country’s demand for labor. According to the BBC, the majority of immigrants are of working age and pays taxes. Due to immigrants boosting the size of the workforce, pensions for senior citizens have been funded. During the Industrial Revolution large numbers of people moved into cities to work in factories and mines. In 2010 there were 475,000 open positions for jobs in the UK; immigrants have helped by filling these positions. In 2012, approximately 145,138 work permits were issued. Almost half of the doctors in the UK are foreign-trained and are able to practice medicine there because of the Highly Skilled Migrant visa system. These doctor position were labeled “hard to fill”. School graduates are more likely to take up certain positions leaving others unfilled. This is happening mostly in the medical field. Immigration exposes both the natives and migrants to new cultures, also exposing them to new values, knowledge, and expertise. By mixing cultures you can understand and appreciate other cultures more. Being exposed to many different cultures can give you a better understanding of how other countries are opposed to your own. It also helps you learn how to deal with people you normally are not familiar with. Many people believe allowing a steady flow of legal immigrants into a country decreases the number of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are a common problem that many countries face, granting permission to more legal immigrants will cut the number of illegal aliens drastically. According to the YouGov for Migration Watch, 72% disagreed that a reprieve should be granted to illegal immigrants in Britain. One of the biggest, growing debates today is the issue of immigration into the U.S. I just don’t understand why there’s such a big debate. I compare this issue to the issue of racism in the way that, no matter what you do, "they" are always going to be here, and it is only ignorance that keeps the issue ablaze. The fact that migrants are not mostly white these days, also makes the issue one more of race. As Charles S. Clark puts it in The New Immigrants, "In the 1990’s, Americans who grew up in a historically white, Anglo-Saxon society are having to adjust to a Polish-born chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, John Shalikashvili; to Spanish-language editions of People magazine on Seven-11 shelves; and to Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques rising in their communities." In the case of immigration, though, the ignorance is apparent in both the immigrant and the non-immigrant.
In the middle to late 1940s, Canada received a great influx of British immigrants. Numbering 48,000, these young women were brides who had wed the nation’s servicemen. Although they came unprepared for the land that would become their new home and faced huge culture shock upon disembarking, Canada’s spirited war brides inevitably transformed the culture that surrounded them. Now, around sixty-five years later, one in thirty Canadians can count a war bride in their family tree (Jarratt, 2009). Through determination to stay in Canada despite huge culture shock, sheer hard work, and despite their hasty marriages, the British war brides of the Second World War have, and are continuing though new generations, impacted the Canadian culture of today.

As more and more illegal immigrants enter the United States, it either upsets some people, or others feel like they should just grant them ability to pursue life, liberty, and happiness because that is what the Constitution says. Some people feel that illegal immigrants should be protected by the same rights and laws as American citizens. On the other hand, many people believe that this is a horrible mistake. They feel that the rights of citizenship should be earned and not extended to people who haven broken the law just by being in the United States.

This is as a result of the high proportion of people from ethnic minorities in London who are in low income combined with the high proportion of the total population in London who are from ethnic minorities. Statistics show that black or minority ethnics (BME) only 20% of the white population live in poverty while people with ethnic origin show much greater numbers. 30% for Indians and Black Caribbean's, 50% for Black Africans, 60% for Pakistanis, 70% for Bangladeshis. The proportion of BME’s in low-income households declined during the late 1990s up to the early 2000s but has been rising since then (Browne, K. et al 2009). It should be noted that the proportion of ethnic people in poverty between 2008 and 2009 was lower than that of a decade previously, however the drop was not large enough to make a significant difference.The effect of this is mostly felt by single mothers, pensioners, children and refugees who Murray (1994) refers to as a new “sub-underclass”. Immigration is a controversial topic that features conflicting opinions on a global scale. This is because skeptics believe that immigrants are taking away the original culture and traditions of individual societies, whereas, those supporting immigration believe that immigrants in fact enrich the culture of the host countries and provide great benefits to the country overall. This ongoing debate regarding immigration has led to the increased difficulty in gaining national citizenship in some countries, such as Saudi Arabia. Other countries, however, welcome immigrants as they believe foreigners are valuable to society. Immigration around the world should be encouraged as immigrants increase diversity, add to the amount of skills and labor opportunities available to the countries they move to, and improve the economy.
