There were 153,058 people granted permission to stay permanently in the UK this year. Most immigrants to the UK are from China, nearly 40,000 people came to the UK last year from the country. Many people do not know immigration in the UK is a very controversial topic. Too much immigration to any country can be a bad thing. While many people believe immigration to the UK is okay others feel it is wrong because they believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Many believe immigration is the main cause behind several of the critical issues the UK faces today. Immigration has had a positive effect by increasing employment options for employers. Immigrant unemployment rates are lower than the average. Immigration can be the key to opening the global market. Immigrants help meet the country’s demand for labor. According to the BBC, the majority of immigrants are of working age and pays taxes. Due to immigrants boosting the size of the workforce, pensions for senior citizens have been funded. During the Industrial Revolution large numbers of people moved into cities to work in factories and mines. In 2010 there were 475,000 open positions for jobs in the UK; immigrants have helped by filling these positions. In 2012, approximately 145,138 work permits were issued. Almost half of the doctors in the UK are foreign-trained and are able to practice medicine there because of the Highly Skilled Migrant visa system. These doctor position were labeled “hard to fill”. School graduates are more likely to take up certain positions leaving others unfilled. This is happening mostly in the medical field. By mixing cultures you can understand and appreciate other cultures more. Being exposed to many different cultures can give you a better understanding of how other countries are opposed to your own. It also helps you learn how to deal with people you normally are not familiar with. Many people believe allowing a steady flow of legal immigrants into a country decreases the number of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are a common problem that many countries face, granting permission to more legal immigrants will cut the number of illegal aliens drastically. According to the YouGov for Migration Watch, 72% disagreed that a reprieve should be granted to illegal immigrants in Britain.
