In the Thoughts of Brahma, a creation story is told. It is told that the world has been and will continue to be created and destroyed many times. Each new world begins and ends with watery chaos. Brahma meditates as he begins creating a new world and takes multiple different forms to create the current world. He creates the night, day, and the in between. Brahma then gets in a dark state of mind and creates ogres; however, he quickly becomes disgusted with this creation and turns them into reptiles. He realizes his darkness and gets back to a pleasant state of mind and creates birds, mammals, and plants. Brahma created all these things with his thoughts and is how he intended them to be. The first age is Satva or goodness, the second is Rajas or energy, the third is a mixture of the first two, and the final age is Tamas or darkness. The first age is the ‘honeymoon’ time. During this time everyone is happy and life is simplistic. No one has to work; no one feels hate or sadness. Everything during this time is blissful. During the second age people begin to lose the feeling of fulfillment. People will start to seek shelter as rain begins to fall and start to make sacrifices to the Gods. People begin to feel more emotions and on a deeper level - emotions such as passion, greed, hatred, and even anger. They begin competing with their neighbors. Eventually, during this age, they learn to steal and commit murder. During the third age, someone starts to write scripture to give people instructions and guidelines for being moral human beings. Age, death, disease and drought are brought during this time and people become numb to everything around them. People begin to see the error of their ways, but not soon enough. During the final age is darkness. Everyone’s senses are blurred and they cannot separate right and wrong. Everyone is at war with each other and scripture no longer has meaning. Minimal people make it through this time and could potentially achieve a state of mental peace. God, after a long period of time sees that things are no longer good. The first murder happens not long after creation. Cain kills his brother Abel and it is made clear that this is not acceptable. From there things just get worse. So God contacts Noah and says to take him and all of his family and build an ark big enough to fit a pair of each type of creature. Once this is done and every God said to be is on the ark, he floods the earth. This destroys everything living thing not on the ark all because it had become complete and utter chaos. Once the ark lands, God promises to never do that again. This is different than Brahma because each age of the four ages has a set number of years and once that is up, the earth is destroyed and recreated again. No one knows how many worlds before or how many worlds after the present one, but with God, he was only destroyed the world once and promises never to do that
At the beginning of time only the Gods where living, until one day Sovereign Plumed Serpent and Heart of the Sky, named Hurricane, created trees, bushes, and life. Bearer Begetter was the creator or animals big and small, like birds, deers, jaguars, pumas, and serpents. When the Gods created animals they created them for the sole purpose of being worshiped by them. However, when they realized that the animals could not speak they decided they would be sent to live in the woods and fend for themselves. After this Xpiyacoc and Xmucane attempted to make humans, but instead of not being able to speak. They appeared to be too unnatural and decided to call them manikins or wood carvings so, Heart of the Sky creates a flood killing them off. It is believed that monkeys look like humans because they are the manikins who survived the flood by climbing onto trees.
In this story the higher power is called the Creating Power. The Creating power was the decision maker when the new world was created. He begun the process by singing four songs. The first three songs brought on heavy rain. The fourth song he sang while stomping on the earth and causing it to crack open. On our planet, phenomena’s occur occasionally in nature. Tornadoes, earthquakes, and flashfloods are all types of phenomena’s that could occur. Most of these mysterious events are small and go unnoticed; however, on a rare occasion these sorts of event can be horrendous. One such occasion occurred back around 4,000 BC (Werner Keller, 48). As the story goes, God’s population was growing rapidly on earth. At this point, he had been growing bored with the same people on earth so he made sure no man would live past the age of 120. Given this time, the people of earth started to take advantage of the human race; these acts of selfishness disgusted God. He decided to destroy everything on earth. A man by the name of Noah had lived his life by God’s nature, which eventually led to a close relationship between the two. God had told Noah to build a boat with exact measurements. God had instructed Noah to put two of every kind of animal into the boat; one had to be male and the other female. Then God told Noah to get into the boat with his family, their families, and the animals. Then for forty days and forty nights the clouds seemed to have poured endless amounts of water onto the earth (Genesis 6:1-9). Floods rushed through the landscape, destroying everything in its path. The waters were higher than the tallest mountains, standing above the highest peaks. All living things on earth had died. The water covered the earth at this level for five months (Paul S. Taylor, 1). In time the water began to dry up. Eventually Noah was able to leave the ship and release all he had brought with him. From this point, evolution occurs.
Genesis chapter 1-3 shows just how awesome God was in his creation. These chapters sum up the seven days of creation as well as sin and evil. However, there was a time that this distinction was taken to the ultimate extreme. One man alone followed God among the multitudes in the civilization that arose after the fall. His name was Noah. Genesis 6 tells us that “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation.” Because of mans wickedness, He decided to send a flood to destroy that wickedness and to kill everyone on the earth except Noah and his family. The narrative of this drastic event in Genesis 6-9 show that God will not tolerate great wickedness forever. Several events including the flood, Sodom and Gomorra, Nineveh, and Babel show us who God is. He is a God of righteousness and justice and hates the wickedness of the world. Ed Hindson and Gary Yates explain that the events surrounding the tower of Babel indicate that God blesses those who obey and scatters those who disobey. As believers, we can see that God desires a heart that seeks Him above all else. Even when everyone else in the world has turned away from God, each of us must stand strong in our faith just as Noah did. In this form Brahma thinks about the loneliness and his body is split in two creating male and female humans. They would be considered to husband and wife and would be the beginning of humanity. The female would wonder how their love is real if it is just one being mating with another, so the male would change himself into the many different species we see walk the earth every day. How the World Was Made, describes how the “soft mud,” from under the water “began to grow and to spread out on every side until it became the island we call the earth.” In The Sky Tree, the soil was “placed...until they made an island of great size.” A final similarity, is how after land came animals and how the animals helped to take care of the people on the earth. In How the World Was Made, the world the animals lived in was called Galun’lati. Galun’lati “was very much crowded,” and “the animals wanted more room;” Water Beetle left to find land so that the animals could have more space. While Water Beetle helped find land for the animals, in The Sky Tree a turtle sees a woman falling from the sky after she had jumped after a sacred tree. The fish were undeniably produced out of the waters, and the beasts and man out of the earth; but that earth and those waters were made out of nothing.
