Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919), 26th president of the United States (1901-09), the first president to exploit the public dimensions of his office in an age of mass communications, a reform leader at home and a skilled diplomat abroad. In his lifetime Roosevelt became a personal model, particularly for the country's youth, in a way that no public figure has matched. He was one of the most popular presidents in American history.
The son of a wealthy, socially prominent merchant, Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. He was educated by private tutors and studied at Harvard University, graduating in 1880 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the most prestigious social clubs. Ill health marred his boyhood, and he suffered poor eyesight, attacks of asthma, and nervous digestion, before teenage body-building efforts transformed him into a strong, vigorous young man. After his father's sudden death in 1878, Roosevelt forsook scientific ambitions, developed political interests, and became engaged to Alice Lee of Boston, whom he married in 1880. Alice Roosevelt died in 1884, just after the birth of their only child. Their daughter, also named Alice, as Alice Roosevelt Longworth became a well-known Washington personality in later years. In 1886 Roosevelt married Edith Carow of New York, who became his most valued adviser. They had a daughter and four sons, the oldest of whom, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., was a decorated hero in the two world wars.

Although he continued to advocate domestic reforms, he increasingly devoted himself to calling for a strong pro-Allied foreign policy and greater military preparedness. Roosevelt was gradually reconciled with his former party opponents, including Taft. He disbanded the Progressives in 1916 to back the Republican nominee against Wilson, and it seemed certain that he would be the party's candidate in 1920. His four sons all fought in World War I, and the death of the youngest, Quentin, in combat as an aviator in August 1918, was a heavy blow. Roosevelt's health deteriorated during the final years of his life, partly as a result of tropical fevers contracted on an expedition to the Amazon region of Brazil in 1914. He died at his home in Oyster Bay, New York, on January 6, 1919.

After the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt inherited a growing empire when he took office in 1901. The U.S. had annexed Hawaii in 1898 and Spanish-American War granted the U.S. control of the Philippines. It also led the U.S. to establish a protectorate over Cuba and grant territorial status for Puerto Rico. By taking on the Philippine Islands as an American colony after the Spanish-American War he had ended the U.S.'s isolation from international politics. Theodore Roosevelt believed that nations should pursue a strenuous life and do their part to maintain peace and order. It was also a belief that civilized nations had the duty of modernizing the barbarous ones. He also pushed for a bigger army and navy and by the end of his presidency he had built the U.S. Navy into a major force at sea.

After high school, he applied to Harvard, and began his education there in 1876. It was there that he met Alice Lee, whom he later married. After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt enrolled at the Columbia University Law School, but he dropped out. Instead he entered politics, which fascinated him. He believed as his father did, that men of wealth and intelligence should devote themselves to public service. At this time, New York politics were ran by corrupt party bosses. Therefore he was discouraged from entering by many of his friends and associates, by them saying “…the organizations were not controlled by ‘gentlemen’…the men I met would be rough and brutal and unpleasant to deal with…”

Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Before Roosevelt became President of the United States, he held several political positions, including the assistant secretary under John Long, the president of New York City’s Board of Police Commissioners, Vice President, but one of his most important positions was the command of the Rough Riders, Teddy’s regiment in the Spanish-American war. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, New York. He was the second of four children and showed at an early age an aptitude for leadership. When Roosevelt was 18 he entered Harvard University and graduated there in 1880 at the age of 22. He married Alice Hathaway Lee in 1880 and they had one child named Alice. Sadly though Alice died giving birth to their daughter. By 1881 Roosevelt was winning appointments to the New York State assembly. Roosevelt remarried in 1886 to Edith Kermit Carow and had five children with her. In 1895 Roosevelt was made Assistant Secretary of the Navy. When the Spanish-American broke out Roosevelt quickly resigned his post and formed a cavalry regiment he named the roughriders. During the war the roughriders lead a charge that captured vital San Juan Hill. After the war he became Governor of New York and later the vice-president under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated on September 6th, 1901 Roosevelt was sworn in as President.

Roosevelt began lobbying Washington so he could raise a division of infantry and cavalry to serve in Europe. He did not receive favorable responses and journeyed to Washington D.C. to personally speak with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and President Wilson. His wish to create a division was refused. Roosevelt would later write a friend that Wilson’s soul was "rotten through and through." In 1918, Roosevelt was once again consorting with Republican conservatives such as Taft and Elihu Root, who were opposed to Wilson and his League of Nations. Roosevelt was overjoyed in 1918 when republicans won a Senate majority. Early in 1919 he was boasting that he would be given the Republican nomination for president in 1920. But he died on January 6, 1919.
