I joined the class for the trip to the "Big Apple" on the eve of Halloween. We departed from a campus parking lot early Saturday morning. Our destination was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located at 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue. I had never been to "the Met" before and I was very impressed. I wandered throughout the museum going from gallery to gallery until I was able to find the two paintings that interested me the most.
The first painting to catch my eye was the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, which was painted by Albrecht Durer around 1519. The German artist lived from 1471 to 1528 and is considered by many the greatest German Renaissance artist of them all. Albrecht Durer used an oil medium on a wooden support to create this wonderful piece of art. The painting is a very realistic portrait of two women and a child depicting people in history. It is a portrait of Saint Anne with her daughter, the Virgin Mary, and the Christ Child.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the finest Asian art collections that has enlightened and strengthened my understanding in my personal art experience. The Museum itself is an artistic architectural structure that graces the entire block on 82nd Street in Manhattan. Entering inside, I sensed myself going back into an era, into a past where people traded ideas and learned from each other. It is a past, where I still find their works of yesteryears vividly within my grasp, to be remembered and shared as if their reflections of works were cast for the modern devoted learner.
Albrecht Durer is known as one of the most gifted painters and engravers of the German Renaissance period. His works are known throughout the world and have inspired artists to not only study and learn his techniques but also to broaden his techniques, expanding his already famous style.
The show’s organizers, Teresa A. Carbone (the museum’s curator of American art) and Kellie Jones, did an exceptional job of strategically placing the artwork in relevance and relating topics to one another. When I arrived, the exhibit was empty and I actually had the opportunity to meet Ms. Carbone, who was on hand at the museum’s entrance.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has many different collections of art ranging from Prints, Ancient Egyptian Art, and Contemporary Art. The collection that I personally enjoy the most is Contemporary Art. Contemporary art is something that people can relate to and something that can be discussed. One piece of work that stands out the most to me is Bringing Forth the Fruits of Righteousness from Darkness created by Damien Hirst. This particular work of art caught my eye because of the materials used to make it, how the eye perceives it, and the theme behind the painting. In todays world everything is so fast paced that we never truly stop to look at all the beauty that surrounds us and eventually we start taking that beauty for granted.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art came about as an idea from Jon Jay in Paris, France in 1866 with the idea of “national institution gallery of art” within the United States. Once this idea was proposed, it was immediately moved forward with his return to the United States. With the help of the Union League Club in NY they began to acquire civic leaders, businessmen, artists, and collectors who aided in the creation of the museum. For over 140 years, the visitors who go here have received everything the mission of the institution states.
My first experience at the museum was a good one. I had so much fun even after we were done with the Norton-Simon. Being a business major, I did not know that art could speak to me as it did. It has not influenced me so much as to change my major, but it did open my eyes to a whole new world. The Museum Of Modern Art “MOMA” was firmly established on 53rd street in 1939 in Midtown Manhattan New York, after a decade of moving due to its growth in modern art pieces. Originally Patrons Miss Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan, and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr. wanted to establish a program dedicated to modern art in the late 1920s. A. Conger Goodyear, Paul Sachs, Frank Crowninshield and Josephine Boardman Crane, whom later became trustees, created the Museum Of Modern Art in 1929. It’s founding Director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr. wanted the MOMA to be "the greatest museum of modern art in the world." Its intent was to provide ordinary blue collar individuals with a better understanding and acknowledgment of art in its era.
In history, there were two paintings that were very similar yet different. One was called the “Mona Lisa” which was painted by one of the most famous artists of the renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci. The other painting was called “Portrait of a Lady” by the flemish artist, Van der Weyden. They both were a huge influence in the art world during their lifetimes. And even after their deaths, their lives and works continue to inspire the minds and hearts of each generation.
The Madonna and Child, created by Cenni di Francesco di Ser Cenni between 1410 and 1415, is an iconographic painting of the Virgin Mary (left) and a chubby baby Jesus (right). The panel is painted with tempera and the halos around Mary’s and Jesus’s heads are made from goldleaf. La Toilette, painted by Richard Miller in 1910, is an Impressionist painting of a woman putting on her make up. He uses this subject to compare putting on makeup to applying oil paint on a canvas. In order to create the desired impact on the viewer of their paintings, Cenni and Miller use similar stylistic techniques to portray their female subjects.
The Art Institute of Chicago helped me embrace the different: works, forms, time periods, and themes of arts that have been around since the start of time. This was the first time I have ever been to the Art Institute of Chicago and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting and embracing every single piece of art I walked past. I enjoyed how the museum was divided and made it easy to find a specific time period you were looking for or a specific category of art. I found so many things interesting in the museum like: the Roman art, the Egyptian art, Asian art, Modern art, Picasso’s work, and the paintings of the 1800s. Without taking this class I would not have been able to recognize any of these paintings and would not be able to look at the symbolism behind each work of art. With this course coming to the end I am able to identify many different pieces and works of art, which makes it exciting. There was nothing that I disliked about the museum, although I find more things exciting than others there was nothing that made me hate it. I found four pieces that popped out to me the most: Mummy Head Cover, Shiva Lord of Dance, Laban Searching for Family Idols among the Possessions of Joseph, and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Each of these pieces came from a different time period and all used a different techniques of art. Seeing all of these pieces in person compared to in the book is an experience that I will never forget.
