When asked the question “Do parents matter?” many things come into factor when trying to answer it, many that aren 't thought of or recognized. Parents do play a big role In a child 's life, roles that we don’t think of that psychological research has been done to prove. In the reading “The Nurture Assumption” it displays research supporting the prompt about parents and the roles they play. In todays society it is most commonly perceived that parents are the reason their children are and act personality wise as individuals. This does play a major role in a child’s life but, Psychologist Judith Rich Harris has research supporting that peer groups do the same. My parents had little demands of me and my brother but, had high expectations for us as well as theres. When you get older these things start to show more in life situations such as, going out with friends, dating, or even in public places. I simply had to tell my parents that I was going out and I knew I was expected to be home at a certain time with no questions asked, on the other hand my friends weren’t allowed to go out with certain circumstances like being around some people who had made bad decisions in the past or even the same religion for one instance I have experienced. It didn 't matter how good they were doing in school, sports, or even church attendance. Their parents controlled them and held them back. As a result of this in high school instead of telling the truth they stopped and felt the need to lie when they got the chance to go out to stay out longer, for some kids they started giving there parents reasons not to trust them when they were out. Some started drinking and smoking. This is one reason why I thank mine for being permissive and me being able to be open and honest with them instead of living a lie. Generally, parents’ want their child will be happy and successful, and these hopes often coexist with their specific ideals and aspirations. According to the article, “On the Relations Between Parents’ Ideals and Children’s Autonomy”, “parents also hope that their children will adopt the ideals they have for them, because if children are to realize their parents have for them, they must pursue these ideals too.” (de Ruyter, and Schinkel 369). Consequently, their parenting style will be influenced by this desire for their child to share the same ideals. In my case, these ideals existed, but weren’t extremely prominent. A more traditional example is one of my best friends, who was a gymnast and cheerleader for almost a decade. I remember her dreading and loathing both activities daily, but her mother signed her up at age five and wouldn’t let her quit until high school because she so intensely wanted her daughter to love what she loved. She decided early on that her daughter would play that role, and did everything in her power to make her achieve the ideal.
In this study, another relationship between parenting styles and child development is presented. Participants were 7,836 adolescents enrolled in six high schools in San Francisco. They were provided with a questionnaire that included student background information, self-reported grades, parental attitudes and behaviors, and family commutation information. The study included three parenting styles, which were authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. Each one of the styles were described in the students’ questionnaire. The authoritarian style included the idea that as a response to a bad grade, parents tend to get upset, and when good grades are achieved, parents tell the student to do even better than what they have done. On the other hand, permissive parenting style was described as parents no caring about the students’ grade, and that hard work in school is not important for them. Then, they included authoritative parenting style as supportive parents that praise the student when good grades are achieved and more freedom to make decisions is given, but when poor grades are obtained, freedom is taken away and students are encouraged to try harder and some source of help is
Based on the parenting style definitions, both my mother and my father use the authoritative style of parenting. My parents have high expectations for both my brother and I for our future as well as to follow their rules. My brother, Tristan, and sometimes I debate with my parents, sometimes it may be about their rules and to justify why we may have disobeyed their rules. My parents encourage our independence giving us trust that we can handle keeping our grades up, keeping up with our chores, and taking care of expensive items they buy for us; thus we must show our maturity to our parents and follow their guide lines. No, parents have darker motives that not all kids catch on to. Parents have children for only one reason, so they do not have to do housework. Think about it, from a young age parents are always forcing their kids to pick up toys or throw away trash. Trust me, these demands are not to teach children anything, it is solely because when the parents were younger they had to clean house and now they no longer want to. My parents have always pushed me to be better than they were. They knew that if I wanted to be successful I needed to go to college. In highschool, they always made me put my education before anything else. My parents didn’t go to college so they would always tell me to not make that mistake because their lives could have been easier if they would of just invested a few more years into their education. They would also tell me about all the opportunities that missed out on because they decided not to further their education.

My socialization while growing up had everything to do with my parents. In my household I didn’t have just one certain style of parenting. My mother was a permissive parent, and my father was very much an authoritative dad. This was able to happen because my father travels a lot of the time and is out of the house, therefore giving me the chance take advantage of my mom being so much of a push over. When my father was gone on business I could get away with anything such as not cleaning my room, staying up as late as I wanted, and receiving anything I wanted. If my Mom did not giving in to my requests I would just throw a simple temper tantrum and five minutes later victory would be mine. On the other hand when my dad was around everything was to be done his way. If he didn’t think I needed it, I did not get it, no matter how much complaining and whining. In my Dads mind I had to deserve everything I received, if I did something wrong couple days earlier he would remind me about it as I was asking for a bike or what ever else it is I wanted. Don’t get me wrong my dad wasn’t a mean guy or an abusive father, I knew my limits and when every I would get dumb enough to cross that line, he was right there to put back in my place.
Every parent has different skills that they use when dealing with their child. Growing up I had two parents with completely different techniques on how to handle situations with me. Both of my parents love me unconditionally, and would give me the entire world if they could. For every parent, teaching lessons and earning respect is a very important aspect to them. Each of my parents love me so much, but both have very different ways of showing affection, discipline, and communication.
When it comes to family I was raised to be respectful of others but still speak my mind if I had an opinion. I was also raised to respect women which is something you do not see often in American culture anymore. I was taught that I am supposed to open a door or give up my seat to a woman. As a kid you do these things because this is the way we are taught; one you grow up you realize that showing people respect is the right thing to do so you continue doing it. The biggest influence my family had on me was teaching me the value of kindness and the power of knowledge. As a kid I was taught to work hard and then have fun later; sort of like the saying people say "work hard and play hard". My parents dropped out of college so that they could give my sisters and I the opportunities they didn't have, this is the reason I have learned the value of hard work and knowledge. I was also taught to be honest as my parents believed that lies don't get people anywhere and if you tell the truth then you never have to remember a lie. All together I think my parents were trying to teach us to act with integrity and not let others think for us. Both of my grandparents raised my own parents when being young kids into having discipline, responsibilities and obligations. Back in the day, the years were different and it required a lot more education/principles. Education has been one of the most maybe top five of me, my character. Since what I remember by parents always taught me the right path, not wrong, they always tried to fix my mistakes so I wouldn 't repeat them or make myself look bad in front of other people. They wanted me to be an educated person with principles, but I never understood why
