School, the place where everyone wants to learn, do well and pass with the best grade possible. There is an abundance of work and core curriculums that students must take on and it tends to put a lot of pressure on them. All grade levels are expected to utilize their skills in tasks and many believe they may not be able to due to its difficulty. This ultimately can lead to issues concerning cheating and plagiarism. I researched two articles concerning cheating and plagiarism, which depict an analysis of why students cheat and the increase in these instances over the past decade. The language used was very technical as it tried to reach an adult audience, the author wanted the reader to understand what students deemed “cheating and plagiarism” with proof, as well as the fact there is no biased opinions within the author’s statements. This writing piece also includes statistical tables taken over the past decade as well as a survey that was taken recently and explanations for the results. Whereas, “Confronting Plagiarism” is the popular article due to its opposing components in comparison to the scholarly article. It is a categorized as a magazine and that is apparent due to the jargon used within the piece, it’s welcoming to a wide variety of audiences. Any reader will be able to understand the information given as it is fairly straightforward and generic. Furthermore, it has pictures that are intended to catch your eye and are related to the topic in a broad way, instead of actually proving anything towards specific claims …show more content…

Scholarly journals tend to have more creditable background and are more trustworthy based on proof of its research data. Popular articles can give you a more broad perspective on a topic and can be more “understandable” due to the fact it’s for a larger audience, but, that doesn’t mean popular articles aren’t all accurate. It depends on the type of article, its data and its background for the claims it has made. Personally, I liked both of the articles as they gave me helpful insight on the topic of plagiarism. However, while the scholarly article gave me factual reasons for cheating through the survey that was conducted, the magazine just gave me general information about the topic, opinions of the author and how she thinks these dishonest acts could be solved. Overall, both articles helped me understand the topic of plagiarism and made me aware of the perspectives of both students and faculty members on this act. It was very eye opening how many disparate actions can be perceived and it shows that students must be careful with how they complete and cite their
