“On average, teens reported their stress level was at 5.8 on a 10-point scale, compared with 5.1 for most adults.” (NBC News) If I were to rate my stress level during the school year I would give myself a four or a seven. The differences between my stress levels depend on what time of year it is. During the school year, my stress levels are more likely to progress into higher integers unlike the small levels I maintain in the summer. Homework, tests, and essays – these are just a few examples of what I stress about during the school year. During the beginning of the school year when school is just getting started, I’m not as stressed because I don’t have any assignments to worry about. As the year progresses and assignments are now being assigned, my stress levels slowly start to rise. Coming out of eighth grade and being put into high school caused more stress than I had ever experienced in my entire life. One of the many ways I learned to deal with stress my freshman year was to make sure I got my homework done at home. If I didn’t do my homework at home, I would stress throughout the day trying to finish it before class. Same with tests, if I didn’t study the night before I would worry about failing the test a class period before taking it. Not only do tests and assignments cause me stress, but writing essays also causes me to worry. Because they involve a lot of hard work in order to get a decent score, essays can make or break my grades. The only time my stress levels would rise to an eight or nine was when I had to give a presentation or a speech. I would be given a speech assignment a week before I would have to give one, and I my stomach would start to turn and cause me extreme discomfort. I disliked getting up in front of a class to give a speech, but there was no way to get out of having to give the speech. I have terrible time management skills when it comes to my time outside of school. Instead of studying for three hours like I wanted to, I go out with friends and ignore the fact that I have homework. I enjoy eating, watching TV, being on my phone. (SS4) Therefore, I would do all of these activities to avoid my studying responsibilities. (BE-) When I don’t study for three hours the night before, this puts me in a difficult situation and results in me being stressed. This is one of the main reasons to why I have so much stress during the school year. The worried thoughts developing in my head produce stomach pains. The amount of stress I bring upon myself is avoidable, but my lack of ambition to do homework doesn’t help me with my unnecessary stress.
