Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic in the 1980s, the disease has carried a stigma that has destroyed lives and families. There are many reasons why HIV carries such a negative image in society due to the nature of the disease, how it is transmitted, and society’s views on bad things happening to people due their choices. As a society, we must work to accept the facts of HIV in an effort to remove the stigma surrounding a life threatening disease.
One of the initial reactions people have to bad news about someone with a disease is the question of whether they are going to die. With HIV, it is well known that HIV can lead to AIDS and AIDS can lead to death. In America, death is a sad subject that is often ignored. No one wants to talk about when they are going to die, especially if it is considered dying young. An individual who is infected with HIV has to tell their parents and family that they could die early.
