Starbucks is a household name in 2017, however, the business started back in 1971 as a single store (Starbucks, n.d.-c). The reason behind the success of the company can be found in the organizations mission and vision statements. From the beginning, the company set out to “share great coffee” and ”help make the world a little better” (Starbucks, n.d.-c., para. 2). Starbucks set out to “inspire and nurture the human spirit” one person at a time (Starbucks, n.d.-c., mission). Starbucks has held true to its mission and vision to do improve the the world around them while establishing themselves as “the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world” (Gregory, 2017, para. 3).

Since Starbucks is committed to leaving the world a better place, it is imperative that they have a leader who posses specific qualities that will further propel their mission and vision for the company. Howard Schultz is the CEO of Starbucks currently. However, initially the small company did not want to hire him and although the market did not indicate that coffee was a good business to be in Schultz actively pursued employment with the organization (Denning, 2016). Through his unwavering persistence to obtain a management position with the company, he ultimately was hired as the CEO (Denning, 2016). Schultz showed uncandid perseverance during the course of the year he was pursuing this position (Denning, 2016).
