Blackaby states “given the opportunity, people gravitate to what gives them meaning, to what engages to the fullest their commitment, talent, energy, and skill.” (2011. p. 13) For me, this opportunity is teaching. I am called to teach. Furthermore, there are several key spiritual leadership qualities found in Spiritual Leadership: Moving people on to God’s Agenda written by Henry and Richard Blackaby (2011) that are imperative to being an effective Christian leader that include being led by the Holy Spirit, allowing God to guide and teach me, using the life of Jesus as a leadership model, and leading by doing. The Holy Spirit’s guidance is not available to the unbeliever. I have the responsibility to read the Bible and apply the truths to my life as well as learn from the many examples of leadership provided by both the Old and New Testaments. Prayer is also another necessary tool that I can use as leader. I can pray for myself to make wise and responsible decisions. I can pray for other people that I work with, for them to make wise decisions and draw closer to the Lord. Together, we can hold each other accountable and encourage each other through our daily interactions as well as our personal daily walk. My faith is placed in God, furthermore, I will continue to pray and seek His guidance throughout my journey. Another important Christian leadership characteristic is to be teachable. I make many mistakes every day. I need to allow God to teach me important lessons through my mistakes. As an educator, it is important for students to see me learn from my mistakes. I also want to continue to learn about areas in my life that I am called to lead. I know that I do not know everything already. As a classroom teacher, it is easy for me to be prideful in many situations, my lessons, specific students learning, my knowledge of my content, and even my classroom management. God should receive the glory for every success in my classroom. Since I am teaching people all day long, it is easy to get frustrated or even angry from bad attitudes, behavior problems, or lack of effort. I must keep this emotion in check by submitting to the Lord and praying for each student. I can also provide multiple opportunities for my students to learn rather than expecting them to get it the first time. As the year progress, it is easy to become apathetic toward lesson planning, classroom management and teaching in general.
