Social Media or Social Destruction? “Our social tools are not an improvement to modern society, they are a challenge to it” (“Quotes”). Modern society has an abundance of technology and means of communication, such as social media. Technology and social media have transformed our society; however, are all these transformations good? (rhetorical question) There are many benefits of technology in our society, but technology also has many negative impacts. We (pronoun to include audience) developed technology and social media to ameliorate society, but is it doing the opposite and destroying our society? Social media has quickly risen to power and gained control over American society. According to the Pew Research Center, from 2005 to 2015 …show more content…
Social media can greatly affect the performance level of students in school: “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 and students who used social networking sites while studying scored 20% lower on tests” (ProCon.org). Social media is a huge distraction for students and has many negative effects on their education. The educations of many students are suffering because of social media and technology. Students often become unable to focus on their schoolwork due to the distraction of social media. I myself am often guilty of becoming distracted by social media and choosing to focus on that instead of my schoolwork. The distraction of technology often prevents students from learning and performing to their full potential. According to Psychology Today, social media and technology are also causing attention spans to decrease in individuals (Luskin). Students are developing shorter attention spans due to extreme social media use, which can also affect their performance in school. Many students are having trouble paying attention and staying focused in school because of how prevalent social media and technology are in their lives. Overall, the educations of many young Americans are being negatively affected due to their strong use of social
Citizens around the world are drastically influenced by the media around them. Every day life is constantly changing because of the new trends on what is popular. As Ms. Susie Orbach stated “Social media […]
Over the past few years, social media has had a significant effect on the communication, knowledge, and public reaction to assorted topics in our society today. Social media has been a great addition to our society today in helping spread news more quickly and makes us communicate more efficiently, but the negatives overshadow the positives. Specific types of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been a catalyst to giving people the opportunities to expose topics and voice their opinions to the public eye. We see athletes, celebrities, and politicians being affected by this every day. In our lives today, everyone has lost their right to privacy due to the expansions and advances of social media. Whenever a tweet is posted on Twitter or a picture is posted on either Instagram or Facebook, many people will emphasize their opinion and sometimes create negative views that can hurt the person being talked about or viewed. We have seen in many major topics in the news, reporters and writers will blast certain topics out of proportion. News stations even affect social media because they often use posts in their reporting. Thus, people will continue to voice their views on social media, causing its influence to continually grow. Social Media has the ability to violate our personal privacy and expose the negative interpretations on people and topics in society.
Since the beginnings of American society, America has used news media as its primary tool to distribute information. Media is involved in nearly every aspect of everyday life. From morning until night, citizens are constantly bombarded by media images on television, radio, magazines, and the internet. However, since the mid-2000’s, one form of media has dominated the social landscape. This type of media has entirely changed the way other media connects with its viewers. It has shifted the power of information from the select few to the masses, from the broadcaster to the audience. It has given the individual voice a pedestal. It has made information faster, busier, more streamlined, more hectic, more interactive, all at the same time. Its name is social networking.
It’s 2016 and if someone doesn’t have social media, then they are just plain weird or some seem to think they are. It’s crazy to think that 20 years ago, we didn’t even have any types of social media. How did we live? Everyone in America has some kind of access to the internet which means they have access to social networking. Social media sites include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr, etc. But is it really as great as everyone thinks? I use to think social media was a fantastic invention to help improve our lives but there are starting to be more cons than pros. I never thought I would see the day where social media was compared to breathing, but some believe it to be really that important. I think social media is affecting
The effects of social media seems miniscule compared to the real effects that they really intel. He believes that there is a strong correlation between social media usage and the degradation in the quality of performance from students in schools across the United States of America, from the grades of freshman through senior year in high school. It shortens our attention spans, diminishes our vision uses—in terms of far sided, near sided, and peripheral vision—and it’s such a major part of our culture that the majority of us fail to recognize that the very thing that society continuously does is setting them up for failure in the most excruciating ways.
With the way the world is now it should be no surprise to anyone that social media has very literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world and even see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives.”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio
First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social media does not only have an impact on the grades of students, but on their lives as well. Cyberbullying has reached an all-time high, and many students are being driven by what others say about them on social media. “49.5 percent of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7 percent actually committing bullying behavior online” (ProCon). Social media is one of many causes why people are not persevering and being successful in
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.
Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, s...
Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has became an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media which could include shopping, research, or other personal reason like venting and status updates. Students often connect to social media because majority of students have one so they feel included. Social Media has became an addiction to many of the students who happen to have a profile to a site. They feel the need to always be connected to society. Many of these students grades have either suffered or raised due to having better connections with other students. My essay will attempt to prove that social media has been affecting the children’s education and prevents them from reaching the academic growth they need.
Social media is becoming the most important and influential technological advancement in our country since the internet was created in the 1960s. For the longest time people were only limited to e-mails to make communication to one another and there were no large scale social media sites available. However, the internet started taking off in the early 2000s as new generations started bringing to the table new and more advanced ideas. Facebook was invented in 2004, where people were able to connect with whoever they wanted throughout the world to communicate and be able to share anything. On their

To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework.
