Communication style can be defined as a person’s characteristic way of speaking. Every different culture around the world all have their own unique twists on how they communicate in comparison to other cultures. After the completion of an interview with Nabil Haddad, a retired High School science teacher from Lebanon, and the Arabic culture, it was analyzed that there are many similarities and differences between the communication styles between the Arabic culture throughout the middle east, and ours in the United States. After completing analysis of the interview, it was deduced that these two cultures have some major differences in communication style. Every culture may have different opinions on what it takes to be a ‘good communicator’, and there are countless different characteristics that this person may have. When asked, in his opinion are some characteristics of a ‘good communicator’ “is an extrovert…they have a good command of the language to express themselves. They are curious usually, because if you aren’t curious you’re not interested in communicating” (Haddad). Within the context of the interview, the answers of what characteristics would be seen are very similar to what could be general answers within American culture. “Araby” is about a young boy (the narrator) who is misled through false hopes by his uncle who bestows the despondency upon the narrator by tricking him into thinking that the boy would make it to the local bazaar “Araby” in time. The boy has a strong sense of respect for his elders as his morals are very religious, and his environment try’s to push the religion which is Christianity on him as well. All the effort the narrator made to get to that crowed, heat infested market was just to impress the neighbor girl who he had been fond of. After many days of stalking the girl (who is referred to as manga’s sister) every morning like a predator, she finally speaks to him. That instant the boy felt all the sensations of being of a boy undergoing his sexual transformation from a young boy to a curios teen and all the troubles he would go through to get that girl’s attention.
What is one of the most essential processes of everyday life that is used across all cultures, ethnicities, and people groups that ultimately is the key to any relationship? The answer is communication, or more specifically interpersonal communication, whether it is by talking, texting, writing, or any other medium the human interaction between two or more people is essential to surviving day to day life. The test relating to my communication style revealed I am a Conventional communicator. I would have to say that I would agree with the explanation of the style and see myself fitting into the category most of the time, particularly in the work place. I do feel with certain situations I can be an expressive communicator, especially when trying to get my point of view across in an argument, or giving advice to a friend. I could see myself as a strategic communicator at times when talking to patients. I would have to change my style of words into words they could understand better, like medical jargon into layman’s terms. As a whole though, more times than not, I see myself fitting into the conventional guidelines below.
A lot of attention has been dedicated to the thought that women and men communicate very differently from one another. In this paper I am going to discuss the gender differences in communications between the opposite sexes. Many believe that gender plays a major role in communication but in all reality, that isn’t the case. Several factors play a part in how someone communicates with another person regardless of their sex. There are many different variations commonly based on a particular individual’s country of origin such as Arab Americans. A Competent communicator defines as a person who can communicate with others properly and sufficiently, and a competent intercultural communicator is the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of other cultures.
