Working Teenagers Parenting methods are different in all families. They can be strict, or lenient, but when one grows into their early teen years, it is time to start thinking. Should a teenager work in High School? In the article “Should teens have part time jobs,” written by Nicole Knepper, she describes how every teenager should have at least a few hours a week at a part time job, because it is the best experience for teens before graduating, and gives some extra money so they do not ask parents to pay their way. In an opposite article named “Working in high school doesn’t pay off the way it used to,” by Allison Schrager, argues differently than Knepper and states that working has died out and it is not worth a teenagers stressed, already busy, life. While working as a teen can be hard, the pros are far greater than cons including the extra money, experience, and people you can meet. Working a part time job early on, can help with life after high school an incredible amount. The references that can be used, and ranks in the company that anyone can climb just by working hard and being there. Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.

Many students believe that they can handle having a part time job and being a college student at the same time. For some students having a job and being in school can be manageable but there is some students who believe they can manage their personal life and school at the same time. In the talk show Tedx Talk with David Ray, Ray mentions that students with jobs tend to struggle more in college and have more of a chance to drop out, when he states “students have to work part time jobs or multiple jobs to pay for tuition and they do less school work”. Most teens are getting jobs at high school ages. They would need a way to get to and from work on their own. More often than not a teens work schedule is not going to coincide with the parent or guardian's schedule. The job would just end up being a hassle for both the teen and the parent taking them. If they have a license, there would not be a problem with getting a job when they can take themselves whenever. Having a job in high school sets you up to be more responsible, builds time management skills, and you can save up college money or money to support yourself.

There has long been an argument as to whether or not high school students should hold a job, especially a service job such as in the fast food industry, during their school year. On one side of the argument are those who believe that holding said job teaches the teenagers responsibility and how to be financially responsible. They even often liken it to having a newspaper route or running a lemonade stand. The opposing side is of the belief that holding a service industry job while attending high school only distracts them from their work and has a negative impact on their studies. Although there are some immediate pros to high schoolers being employed in the service industries during their school year, in the long run, we are setting today’s youth up for failure, both educationally and life in general.

Many teens become overwhelmed with the stresses of high school and raising a baby; therefore, dropping out of school may seem like the best option.
