She 's cold and fierce
Fear and frustration filled my mind as I desperately tried to stay afloat, cold waves crashing on top of me, sluicing me further and further away from the sanctuary of land. With half of my body frozen I feebly tried to swim against the tide with little success but with every kick, I could feel a sharp piercing pain on my left leg. With the steady and agonising lapse of time synchronised with my sense of ever increasing woe, the weight of the water weighing me down felt worse than it most likely physically was. My chest caved in and my lungs felt empty. Gasping for air, I could see the beach receding in the distance. The more I fought against the waves the more I was dragged to the deep sea. I tried to relieve it with a kick which only resulted in an increase in pain. Everything had happened so quickly and in mind, it was an incomprehensible event. With a pathetic struggle, I tried to stay afloat, not noticing that I had traveled out to sea. In the distance, I could make out a few figures on the beach. Desperately gasping for air while trying to stay afloat, I yelled out for help hoping that one of those specks of figures would hear.
Out of nowhere I heard a deep voice yelling out, "Hey kid!" My vision was blurry; I turned my head left and right to see where the voice was coming from. I spotted a small white boat coming towards me. Relief instantly surged through me. Filled with a rush of energy, I tried to fight against the tide with all my remaining strength but halted in complete exhaustion after only moving a metre of so. Breathless, somehow I spurted a desperate help then sunk, totally overcome by pain and exhaustion. All the sudden I felt strong hairy arms slither around me. They pulled me up to where a small old rusty boat was waiting.

I smiled to myself and decided that I would go join in. With that, I took a huge deep breath and jumped into the salty water. The water was cool and refreshing; I felt it slide through my hair making it sway in the water. I swam deeper and deeper into the deep blue water. Sunlight streamed through it, lighting up the water around me turning it to gold. I kicked harder and I felt my muscles surge with strength and I pushed further. My lunges began to burn for the need of oxygen, but I refused to go up. I repeatedly told myself just a little bit longer. Until I was unable to proceed anymore without more air in my lungs, I swam to the top of the water taking a huge breaths, filling my lungs with air. I could then taste the salty water as it ran down my face and dripped over my lips. Just then I thought, I will never forget this moment, this place, or the experiences I felt while visiting
It was a warm rainy June night the humidity was high which made it even harder to breathe on the crammed boat. My family was asleep on the constantly rocking boat suddenly the boat shook, but my family was still fast asleep. I couldn’t seem to fall asleep so I got up and stepped out on the cold wet steel boats upper deck to get some air. When I got outside I realized that it was pouring bucket sized rain. I saw increasingly large waves crash furiously against the lower deck. Hard water droplets pelted my face, I could taste the salt water in my mouth from the spray of the ocean. Suddenly A massive wave slammed hard against the ship and almost swallowed the boat. Wind gusts started kicking up. I held onto the rail grasping it as if it were my prized possession. I hold back tears with fire and brimstone and I start to paddle as if the devil were behind us even though I am feeling drained as well. After about another hour or so it seems we start closing in and my father feels sand brush his feet. We both let out a huge sigh of relief as my father finally touches the bottom. still being about a quarter mile from the shore we do sort of a “Island hop” with the sand patches and we make our way back from where we came. Once we get back we decide thats enough beach for the day and go home. Feeling victorious and defeated at the same time I still hold a scar within me. and within that scar there is a small dark hole within me that is afraid of the ocean. And to this day I fear I will forever be afraid.
The ocean is mysterious to mankind. The unfathomable vastness of the ocean intrigues humanity into exploring it. In life, the immense possibilities that lie in the future compel us to reach for the stars. In the poem “The Story” by Karen Connelly, an individual willingly swims into deep waters even though they are fearful of what may exist in the waters. The swimmer later finds out that their fears were foolish, which illustrates the human tendency to venture into the unknown. The theme conveyed in this poem is that life is like a rough, uncertain, uncontrollable ocean that we must find get through with experience.
...as hurriedly approaching my toes. I clinched my toes deeper in the sand to prepare myself to get annihilated by the wave’s white water. But, of course, it was just the familiar feeling of the cool rush between my feet as they sunk deeper into the sand. Scanning the water vigorously, I tippy toed my way out into bottomless ocean. Remembering the feeling of the tingle and than burn, I peered back to see my beach chair waiting for me in the scorching sun. While I contemplated turning around and heading back to my safe place. I continued on. I continued to walk forward. I did not stop once the water passed my waist. I would not let the phobia of jellyfish hold me back from the once place I loved the most. As the water washed over the tips of my hair, warm memories of my past fled into my mind. I let my once again peach colored toes disappear deeper into the blue water.
I struggled to keep my head above water as fierce waves battered against my fragile body. My lungs screamed in anguish as harsh cold water filtered into them, steadily consuming the space that had moments ago been occupied by oxygen. As I felt my strength waning, I wondered if fighting was even worth it. After all, it would be just as easy to let the waves overtake me and be gone forever. Oftentimes, uncertainty can strike people when it is least expected.
The vibrations of the sinking ship grew stronger and it was becoming unsafe to stay on board. It was like the Titanic; people were falling and sliding everywhere. We stopped in an empty hallway, the sounds of the screaming anxious people echoed off the walls. Starting to lose all hope, I remember sitting on the floor crying, I couldn't believe I was about to die on a spring break cruise with a boy I just met. Before I could comprehend what was happening, Marc threw me overboard onto what I thought would be the salty ocean water, but was taken aback by the hard wooden lifeboat coming in contact with my boney ass.
I was one of the first people to jump into my inflatable duckie, but I was one of the last to get on the river. Once I launched into the river I looked all around me to see the shores covered in pointy trees that were trying to impale anyone who dared go near them. Out of nowhere I hit a rock under the waves, but it was too late and I lost all control of my boat and fell face first into the river. After hitting the water I realized really how cold and dark the water was I started to try to swim to the surface, but it felt like I had cinder blocks attached to my feet weighing me down. SPLASH, I got to the surface in time to grab my slippery oar and jumped onto my boat. I was shaking from the cold water, and had a taste of salty muggy water in my mouth, which I was desperately trying to get out. I quickly paddled in my boat to get back to the group so I wouldn’t be left behind. While paddling I was looking all around at the massive evergreen trees standing on the shore as if they were columns of a old building, the sky as a large blue ocean, and the birds chirping as if they were fans in the stadium at a football game. The smell of the restaurants faded and the new, refreshing aroma of the sea salt in the air took over. The sun’s warmth on my skin and the constant breeze was a familiar feeling that I loved every single time we came to the beach. I remember the first time we came to the beach. I was only nine years old. The white sand amazed me because it looked like a wavy blanket of snow, but was misleading because it was scorching hot. The water shone green like an emerald, it was content. By this I mean that the waves were weak enough to stand through as they rushed over me. There was no sense of fear of being drug out to sea like a shipwrecked sailor. Knowing all this now I knew exactly how to approach the beach. Wear my sandals as long as I could and lay spread out my towel without hesitation. Then I’d jump in the water to coat myself in a moist protective layer before returning to my now slightly less hot towel. In the water it was a completely different world. No one else except for my friend sitting next to me seemed to notice that the raft in front of us was stopped. As we got closer we heard them shouting something, but no one could understand them over the sound of the water clashing against the rocks. We kept approaching, getting closer and closer, and out of nowhere we saw something bobbing up and down in the water – all I could tell was that it was bright orange. It only took a few seconds to realize that it was someone holding onto their life jacket was latched on a rock, and right behind him was a small waterfall that was trying to suck him in. We got closer and I realized that I would be closest to him as we passed, but I would not be able to reach him with my arms. I reached out as far as I could with my paddle, yelling at him to grab it. I was not even the one in the water, and yet it was still one of the scariest moments of my life when he let go of the life jack in order to reach for my paddle. He grabbed it as tightly as he could and my friend next to me helped me pull him in. Everyone else was trying to slow down the raft so that he could get pulled in before we went down the waterfall, and thankfully, due to everyone’s straining effort, we were able to accomplish just that. The hope I had for seeing my brothers again had vanished. I did not know how to swim. I could feel the ship lowering into the ocean. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a wooden barrel. I figured that I could float on the barrel, until someone came to rescue us, if they ever did. I grabbed the barrel, and held on for dear life. As I inched my way toward the cliff, my legs were shaking uncontrollably. I could feel the coldness of the rock beneath my feet when my toes curled around the edge in one last futile attempt at survival. My heart was racing like a trapped bird, desperate to escape. Gazing down the sheer drop, I nearly fainted; my entire life flashed before my eyes. I could hear stones breaking free and fiercely tumbling down the hillside, plummeting into the dark abyss of the forbidding black water. The trees began to rapidly close in around me in a suffocating clench, and the piercing screams from my friends did little to ease the pain. My heart was beating loud and fast in my chest. It was getting harder and harder to keep myself above the icy water and my body was slowly shutting down. I tried to fight back by thrashing my arms and legs around but I quickly got tired and my limbs were going numb. Screaming was no use as it barley sounded like there was any noise escaping my mouth.
I will never forget the first time I went snorkeling, it was something I had been afraid to do up until the moment I touched the water. Beforehand all I could think about was what if I got attacked by a shark? I was too young to die and I felt like I was tempting fate. Then once I made the plunge into the water everything washed away, as if the waves carried the fear with them as they folded over me. I remember that day so clearly, rocking back and forth, up and down, I sat on a small glass bottom boat. The enormous ocean waves making me nauseas as I put my snorkel gear on. I hurried as fast as I could, knowing my nausea would go away as soon as I entered the water. This wasn’t the first time I have gotten sea sick, but it only shows up when the boat is sitting still. As soon as I got my equipment on I jumped into the water, fins first. I felt the sensation of goose bumps shivering up my whole body, tiny bubbles rolling over my body from breaking the surface, they ran from my toes upwards to break free at the ocean’s surface. Once the bubbles cleared, I looked around to see a new blue world I have never experienced before. I heard the sound of the ocean, mumbled by the sound of my deep breathing and the tanks of the more experienced scuba divers below me. It’s a very relaxing and peaceful sound, and if I had not been in such a new and unusual place I could have floated with my eyes closed for hours.
This lukewarm water was deceiving though, because it only seemed lukewarm due to the drop in temperature and misty rainfall. The waves were rushing toward me like a bull to a matador’s red flag. My mouth tasted as if someone dumped a whole shaker of salt on my tongue. The wave pushed my further and faster as it I could feel the wave breaking on my body and there I was back at the shallows again floating in with the white wash and was ready for another wave. As I stood back up and ran back out to the deep water I saw one of my surfing mates catch the most perfect barrel it was rad. It would have been a great snap shot. I caught another wave, this one was even bigger. The thrust of the wave was twisting my body and I was pulled towards the sea
