Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee on the 21st of May, 1960, to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. From a very young age Jeffrey was a normal young boy who showed no signs of any mental problems. At a very young age Jeffrey began to develop an interest in dead animals when his father found a number of dead animal bones while sweeping under the house. This didn’t affect the way he behaved until when he started going to preschool. Whilst attending preschool Jeffrey was seen as a very shy boy, at the same time his interest in animals began to grow. When Jeffrey was four years old his father found some dead animal bones under the house and Jeffrey enjoyed playing with them and breaking them into pieces. This became an exciting experience to him where at one point he helped his father nurse an owl. Jeffrey’s father worked long hours which resulted in him being absent most of Jeffrey’s childhood. This is when he began to show a change in his behavior, being shy and avoiding taking part in activities which children of his age enjoyed. Jeffrey had to had surgery done when he was six years old, and when he woke up he was worried someone had cut of his genitals and the pain lasted for one week. When Jeffrey recovered from the surgery he began to isolate himself and became a loner. When he began school his teachers were very concerned that he showed no interest in his school work and he was very shy. With his father working long hours and his mother suffering from serious psychological problems Jeffrey didn’t have a parental figure to guide him. For a normal child he didn’t show any facial expressions when he is happy or sad, where according to (Miller, Vandome and McBrewster, 2009) he remained motionless up to his death. Jeffrey was never close to any of his parents and felt rejected by society which made him feel unwanted in society. He felt more rejected in life throughout primary school and high school where he didn’t have any friends or have a social life besides paying people to come to his apartment which influenced him to begin to drink heavily. According to the social control theory If Jeffrey had made friends in school or when he joined the army or any close relationships this would have prevented him from committing all those crimes. When his victim would try to leave he would strike them and prevent them from leaving as the loneliness and fear of rejection grew. At a young age Jeffrey satisfied his inner self from the loneliness by disfiguring dead animals which he later on carried on by disfiguring the corpse of his victims.
As children, our parents tell us that monsters do not exist. The truth is that they do exist and they live among us, masquerading as one of us. Two examples of these monsters are serial killers Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. A serial killer is classified as a person who kills three or more people, in separate events, over a time frame of a month, with “cooling off” periods in between. While Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer both share a sick twisted mind and a penchant for killing, differences in their upbringing, personality, and preferences drastically set them apart.
Dahmer, for example, essentially wanted others to be submissive to him; this served a basis for having his victims rendered unconscious before he did the truly disturbing aspects of his actions. He also craved the everlasting companionship that having corpses around could satisfy well enough because he also did not want them to leave, either. Suppressing his true feelings also played a major role in the attacks. He refused to share anything, so dark fantasies grew heavier in his mind and eventually led to 17 deaths. Finally, death fascinated him, as well as control, from a young age, which led to him killing and dissolving animals in acid. Simply put, Jeffrey Dahmer had predominantly selfish, compulsion-driven reasons for doing his crimes. In contrast, Grendel was only acrid that he did not have the comitatus that the Danes had. He also hated the songs about God that the people in Herot sang due to God exiling him. While Dahmer obsessed over the concept of death itself, Grendel was more obsessed with the act of killing, even getting giddy over seeing the sleeping warriors in the mead hall. Lionel and Joyce Dahmer gave birth to their first born, Jeffrey Dahmer, on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee. Despite Joyce experiencing a difficult pregnancy, Dahmer was a healthy child who was wanted and adored by both his parents. However, his mother did start to become distant to him as she refused to breast feed him and started demonstrating unstable behavior along with substance abuse. Meanwhile, his father was pursuing his doctoral for chemistry in Iowa which limited the time Lionel had with his family. At age five, Dahmer’s little brother was born and that was when the feeling of neglect set in him. For the first time, the little attention provided from his parents had to be shared with his brother David. Dahmer began displaying extreme shyness but also severe tantrums. During the ages of six and seven, Dahmer “was regarded by other children as odd and bizarre (Martens, 2005).” Even though he did not show any interest in developing genuine social relations, Dahmer did demonstrate a fascination with bug and animal dissections. When Dahmer was six he had “undergone hernia surgery, when he woke up from the anesthesia he was worried someone could have cut his genitals, the pain lasted for one week and after a long recovery period his parents remember he turned to be very loner (Giannetakis, n.d.).” It is believed that at age eight Dahmer had been sexually abused by a boy in his neighborhood (Hickey, 2013). If this event did occur, it could explain why he developed destructive sexual fantasies at the young age of twelve. Despite him being aloof, it has been reported that he would seek attention by faking epileptic seizures at school and local shops. By his adolescent years, he developed compulsive masturbation which would eventually lead to legal trouble (Silva, 2002). At the age of fourteen, Dahmer turned to alcohol abuse in order to overcome his feeling of despair and compulsive thoughts of sexual violent acts.
This left his mother to feel lonely and have a constant need for Lionel’s attention when he was home. This left Jeffery to be alone and neglected from his parents. When Jeffery’s father wasn’t home, his mother was reportedly taking pills and eventually became addicted to the same pills. Jeffery’s mother had also tried to commit suicide at one point while he was in the home. As time moved on Jeffery began to do many odd things when he got older. One of which being he would collect animal carcasses on his way home from school. He would then take them home and mutilate the skeletons and sometimes even bleach the bones, in his backyard. Dahmer’s dad claims that Jeffery was “oddly thrilled” with the sound of bones breaking, but his father said he thought he was scientifically curious. In 1966, the family moved to Ohio after the mother found out she was pregnant with his younger brother. A couple of years after moving, the family spiraled out and his parents got a divorce. Joyce Dahmer got custody of the younger brother and since Jeffery was 18 at the time, his parents didn’t try to take custody of him (biography.com). With most crimes there are multiple theories behind why a person might have committed a crime. In the case of Jeffery Dahmer the Social Control Theory is just one theory that explains why he committed such a horrifying act. The Social Control Theory states that everyone has the potential to become a criminal, but most people are controlled by their bonds to society (Siegel, 2008). The Theory suggests that a crime usually occurs when the bind people have with society is weakened or broken.
There was no abuse or trauma that was said to have happened during his childhood; however, it was said that he became more reserved as he grew older. He showed little to no interest in hobbies, but he was fascinated by dead animals. During his high school years, he was heavily abusing alcohol which caused his father to make him enlist in the army. He was soon kicked out and went to live with his grandmother, who then reported that he was showing very odd behavior. His parents got divorced in July of 1978 and this took a negative toll on Jeffrey. Dvorchack states, “During the divorce, Jeffrey Dahmer was left alone. His mother moved to Wisconsin with his younger brother, David; his father had moved out of the house. He was left with no food, no money and a broken refrigerator” (Dvorchack). Dahmer was a pretty normal, but very lonely kid. His loneliness followed him throughout the course of his life. Never having an intimate friendship or relationship, along with being consumed with confusion over his own sexuality eventually led him to become the household name he is today. From 1978 to 1991, Dahmer murdered 17 boys and men. Not only is he considered a murderer, but he committed (on several occasions) rape and dismemberment. After his later murders, he was found guilty of necrophilia, cannibalism, and permanent preservation of body parts. He is arguably the most well known, gruesome, and intriguing criminal in American history.
This paper explores three criminological theories as to why Jeffrey Dahmer committed his crimes. Although these approaches vary in terms of defining the cause of crime, one thing is certain, there is no single cause of crime; the crime is rooted in a diversity of causes and takes a variety of forms depending on the situation in which the crimes occur. However, the published articles vary in their definitions and uses of Criminological Theory. Rawlins (2005) suggest that the criminal phenomenon is too complex to be explained by a single theory. Other theories suggest differently and; therefore, have varying explanations. This paper examines the Psychological, Biochemical, and Social Process theories to slightly explain Jeffrey Dahmer’s actions.
