Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments (Bandura, 1997). Self-efficacy works hand-in-hand with a student’s abilities to have self-control in their motivation, behavior and their social environment. In the classroom self-efficacy will be present in situations involving their overall behaviors and learning achievements. A student with good self-efficacy will show a good conscience when making decisions on their behavior, time management, and effort given throughout the course work that is given to them. This will be a case to case situation as everyone is different, but also will depend on the age of the student. Self-regulation is then the ways in which you can monitor and track the process. Goal setting as well as consequences fall under the branch of self-regulation. In the classroom self-regulation can be seen as achieving the goal set out for an individual or the opposite of the consequence given for failure of the goal. Self-regulated learning includes many steps such as goal setting, planning, self motivation, flexible strategies, self monitoring, and self-evaluation. Both self-efficacy and self-regulation are key components that can help a classroom strive.

The root self is key, as if they do not take these steps, no one will. It is key at an appropriate age to show kids, they are in the end the boss of themselves mean no one is going to do the work for you if they want progress. Finally, it is key to have high student engagement in the classroom. This can give the students a chance to be leaders to their own peers, but also keeping them involved in activities with an open mind. Having some complex and critical thinking activities throughout units will help challenge students, and therefore give them the chance to put into practice self-efficacy and self-regulation. As it is said “practice makes perfect”, but what some believe should be “practice makes permanent.”
