The second placement opportunity was set in a busy ward in one of the NHS trusts.

This reflects on one of the registered nurse whom I will call as Nick from who I witnessed great organisation skills and a well person centred approach. The patient who I will call as Mr. Smith age 68 had left hip replacement and has Alzheimer’s. The patient experiences anxiety and agitation at some times and can be physically aggressive. Smith’s life physically, socially, and psychologically. Physically Mr. Smith is physically losing ability to feed himself therefore he required assistance in mealtimes to ensure that he is receiving adequate care and nutrition. He loses ability in personal care such as washing himself and even sleep. In addition, cognitive ability is affected which can lead to disorientation and difficulty to carry out common task such as combing hair.

Socially shows signs of aggression at times which can be challenging that hinders some relatives to interact with him. In addition, he can still socialise with some nurses and have a usual conversation. Psychologically he can show signs of verbal aggression towards other people and physical aggression. This is due to behavioural and psychological changes mostly for people with Alzheimer’s. There was a research that suggests that gene enzymes called tryptophan hydroxylase which responsible for production of serotonin has correlation with aggression and anger.
