Introduction
This report was requested by Winston Hiliau, to discuss a roading project listed on the Auckland Transport website. Of all the given current and completed projects, I have chosen “Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street Upgrade” as my report topic.
The New Zealand government has a $30 million budget to upgrade and widen Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street located between Clark Street and the intersection of New Windsor Road and Maioro Street. The project’s aim is to increase road safety and to provide an efficient road environment for all users. The construction has started on August 2012 and is expected to be completed this month.
Background
The number of vehicles expected to use the busy 2.2km sketch of arterial road each day is 31,400. Since 1920s, the busy route served as a helpful route to the community that provides access to homes and businesses in West Auckland. The demand for a higher standard of urban roads has increased over the years. To meet the challenges and demands of the future, the corridor needs an upgrade.
Problem statement
Due to increase in population and traffic flow, road user demands will increase significantly in the next few years. Installing safer pedestrian islands, safer four-lane route between State Highway 20 and Portage Road, New Lynn, safer footpaths, and safer intersections will help provide the community a safer and efficient working environment.
Project objectives and benefits
Recently, Deputy Local Board Chair Susan Zhu and board member Duncan MacDonald have visited the site and said the project will be beneficial to the public.

Longmire Road Widening, City of Conroe – Part of the design team for the final phase of widening Longmire Road from FM 3083 to League Line Road. Began managing the design team between the 30% and 60% submittals to address some difficult situations encountered during the design. The length of the project was approximately 3.6 miles. The existing 2-lane open ditch roadway is presently constructed of asphalt pavement with existing shallow roadside ditches. The project is called “Paths To Progress.” Paths to progress is an improvement program for transportation, in efforts to restore and further improve the quality of of more than 60 road way segments in New Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. The project is a collaborative result between a few organizations. including: The Federal Highway administration, New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, Louisiana Department of Transportation, and the City of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina and Rita damaged many roadways that were already in the process of being repaired. The roadways are major routes that will benefit residents, business owners and tourists as well. The improvements will include pavement resurfacing, patching, repairing curbs and building ADA- compliant accessible ramps. Florida has five point two percent of Americas' population, and just two point eight percent of the nations' roads. Population rose over forty percent in the eighties while the number of vehicles increased fifty percent. This means, roads have about twice the amount of traffic necessary. To maintain and keep up with population growth, twenty-four thousand five hundred ninety-eight additional miles would need to be added by the year 2000. The Department of Transportation has said it is highly unlikely due to the minimum amount of funds.
In carrying out it remit, it faces a number of key challenges, not least is the safety programme. Excellent progress has been made on upgrading the national road network in recent years, but much of the unimproved network remains congested, sub-standard and unsafe.
The roadway devoured and divided neighborhoods, cut off the city from waterfront, and created confusing traffic situations below. In 1954, it was decided to sink the rest of the roadway underground. Once completed the artery was able to handle about 75,000 vehicles a day. However, a lack of breakdown lanes, an abundance of on and off ramps, and numerous sharp curves makes the artery a treacherous drive. Residents were so unhappy with the Central Artery that officials decided not to build the Inner Belt. That meant that the Central Artery had to handle all of the traffic that was meant to be split between the two. This only exacerbated the existing problems. By the 1980πs conditions on the road had worsened so much that officials were forced to once again step in. Toda the Central Artery carries 190,000 vehicles a day. It has an accident rate four times the national average for urban highways, and is backed up bumper-to-bumper six to eight hours a day.
Traffic engineers and planners need information about traffic. They need information to design and manage road and traffic system. They use the information for planning and designing traffic facilities, selecting geometric standards, economic analysis and determination of priorities. They use this to justify warrant of traffic control devices such as signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, school and pedestrian crossings. The also use this information to study the effectiveness of introduced schemes, diagnosing given situations and finding appropriate solutions, forecasting the effects of projected strategies, calibrating and validating traffic models.

The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from locations is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. Many countries face transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes usually takes about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has become a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. The development of urban transportation has not changed with the cities; cities have changed with transportation. This chapter offers an insight into the Past and the future of Urban transportation and is split up into a number of different sections. It includes a timeline of the different forms of transport innovations, starting from the earliest stages of urban transport, dating back to the omnibus (the first type of urban transportation) and working in a chronological order until eventually reaching the automobile. However, these changes in Urban transport did not happen for no reason. Different factors within society meant urban transport needed to evolve; points will be made on why society needed this evolution. In contrast I will observe the problems urban transport has caused in society as a result of its rapid progression. Taking account of both arguments for the evolution of urban transport, I will look at where it will go in the future.
Auckland transport participated with Auckland Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) for funding the Tiverton-Wolverton upgrade. It cost $30 million to upgrade this busy 2.2km what will bring many benefits for road users and who living around this area.
