Right a story is like build a bridge between your imagination and imagination of your reader. Stephen King once said, “Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s. ”. In other words, the writer needs to be skilled enough to create his or her own world and show the reader how to get there. How can you gain this knowledge? The answer is as simple as it can be- practice. As an international student inexperienced in English academic writing, I have struggled with making my ideas clear and interesting. For instance, some areas I improved in were breaking the writing into small paragraphs, condense long sentences, and place clear thesis in an appropriate place. All listed above is inherent to characteristic of a persuasive essay. Although it seems to be plain and simple, but the ability to do it correctly will come only with practice. In the Comparison and Contrast Essay “Gain Knowledge or Make Money”, the original had long paragraphs too many details in it. Therefore, the revised version has shorter paragraphs separated by the topics. The thesis work is to directly state a writer opinion, by supporting the body paragraphs, and answer the prompt if there is one. Nevertheless, in the in-class essay about jock culture “In a Favor of Jocks” my thesis did not answer the prompt and did not represent what I tried to write about. After revision I changed it from “However, athlete are growing up in a special environment that helps them become more prepared for real life and be successful” to “However, there are certain aspects in which jocks are in the lead that represent them from the positive side for example communication skills, fruitful approach to work, and enduring pressure in a stressful situation.”. Changes I have made clarified my idea about this topic and gave the hint on what will be covered in the essay. Prince Henry of Portugal, more commonly known as Henry the Navigator, and Zheng He, a successful Chinese admiral, were both extremely accomplished men throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. During this era, many accomplished explorers ventured out into the ocean and discovered new lands, two of the most important men being Henry the Navigator and Zheng He. Although both men came from different backgrounds, their contrasting societies and structures affected the way in which they regarded economic and political expansion and also their contact with other cultures. Societies like the Chinese and Portuguese had many cultural differences such as their different religions. The Chinese practiced neo-Confucianism whereas the Portuguese were Christians which was one of the many purposes of their exploration, to spread Christianity. There were also many cultural similarities between the two societies such as their long lasting histories and their explorer’s curiosity to seek out to new lands, which resulted the two societies in having different views on economic and political expansion and contact with other cultures. Both Confucian and Christian ideologies favored those who worked over the wealthy. Thus, to a larger extent, the structures and values of a society have an extensive impact on the way people view economic and political expansion and contact with other cultures.

Writing a story is pretty difficult. Writing a short story is even harder, there is so much that has to be accomplished; in both commercial and literary fiction! The plot, the structure, whether it has a happy, unhappy, or indeterminate ending. There must be artistic unity, chance, coincidence, rising action, climax, falling action. Most importantly there must be characterization. Characters make the story! “anyone can summarize what a person in a story has done, but a writer needs considerable skill and insight into human beings to describe convincingly who a person is” [page 168]
I had written my essay in favor of pursuing higher education, coupled with a counterargument against Jon Spayde's informal "in-the-streets" definition of education. However, my thesis had not captured my argument as precisely as I had hoped. In addition, there were times where my ideas were forcibly stretched, and appear wordy or repetitive as a result. If I had more unique ideas, I would be able to write more paragraphs which would be more focused to meet the page count instead. Many of the mistakes I would have deemed inconsequential in the past resembles glaring flaws now. The introduction and conclusion paragraphs were where the most work was done. In the introduction, I inserted a hook and blended the paragraph together. I accomplished this by adding transition words and changing the tense to fit the rest of the essay. In the conclusion, I completely started over. The original was bland, boring, and just plain repetitive. In the revised version, I outlined the essay, restated the thesis, and ended by suggestion other applications.
Regardless of all of these improvements, I know my writing is still far from perfect. My arguments still lack the emotional appeal that, if present, would make my audience consider my arguments a lot faster. My analysis still lack development because often times I just state what happens instead of explaining why. In general, I need to work on controlling my voice and tone throughout an entire essay, which can be fixed if I choose my words more carefully to make sure my diction is uniform. Despite all of this, I am satisfied with myself, I am satisfied with the ways my writing has changed, with the way my writing skills have grown. Why? Because I am learning, and I know that I will continue improving as long as I take chances.

I did not have a firm writing philosophy before this semester, but I to some degree I understood the importance writing can have on a situation. Now I understand that writing has two outcomes: gaining support or losing support. When writing an essay it is best if the writing is as specific as possible. This way the audience is hopefully not left with a confused opinion about the topic. Since the beginning of the semester I have put a conscious effort to change my writing style. Instead of the box format that is learned in high school I try to use a more graceful approach while still being organized. Also, I evaluate the credibility of a source before I use the information to support my thesis and understand the roles of using ethos, pathos, and logos. My assignments are now written with more developed thought by elaborating on ideas in the body paragraphs. By participating in the assignments throughout the semester I have accomplished, to different extents, the objectives for the English Composition 101 course. My writing has improved in multiple areas such as knowing who my audience is, and how writing drafts and making revisions help me evaluate the effectiveness of my essay. I am also aware that academic writing differs from day-to-day writing because for academic writing I need to present the most credible evidence in an organized format. Furthermore, I now can effectively evaluate my writing to know where I can improve.

The easiest part of this component was actually inserting it in my essay after I understood the purpose for it, because at the beginning I was confused on the whole thesis concept. The thesis was the most challenging because I kept asking myself "Can I really argue this for five to six pages?" and also "Is this even considered a thesis statement?" My sentence structure has always been strong and I feel it has grown because of the practice we have had in class with finding thesis statements in our readings. My overall issue with this component of the writing process is using a justifiable argument and remembering to support my argument with claims and trying not to put unnecessary points in my paper while maintaining my ethos.

I want to say that I made huge changes to these paragraphs. In the original essay, I discuss about how Facebook can fight back against fake news along with the French president promoting a law that deal with reducing fake new too. I didn’t included a source that talks about Facebook’s method of combating fake news, so I included a source along with adding more explanation in the revised essay. For the other con point paragraph, I found a more up to date and better article about the fake news law that Malaysia is trying to promote. I replaced entire paragraph about the fake news law in France with the fake news law in Malaysia. In the refute paragraph, I tried to add a better explanation of why banning fake news was bad because I felt that I did a bad job of explaining it in the original. Throughout the essay, I revised my grammar, word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure. To help my audience have clarity of the college students I was mentioning in my essay I included the time and place in the first paragraph. I cut out text and added words in the second sentence to make it clear to readers when I transitioned to students in my topic; fourth sentence because it was too wordy to understand how college students life style altered when they attended college; fifth sentence because it was imprecise how abnormal sleeping patterns was caused from sleeping; and in the last sentence I replaced a semi-colon punctuation with a word to help readers identify my thesis and clarify that it was a part of the final sentence. I believe that writing stories gives you more of an appreciation and understanding for a good book. All of the ideas that make a book come alive is from one author with an amazing imagination, who can captivate someone’s mind and tuck them into their world for a few hours. Every day in class I was allowed one hour to dedicate my time into a story, it is almost like entering your main character’s mind and acting as if it was you.
