Life itself would be entirely impossible without proteins. There are so many types of protein and every protein has a unique job or function, some of these include giving shape and structure to cells, message carrier, enzyme promoters and some proteins even act as hormones, elastic fibers, and even antibodies (Albert al et., 2013,120). However, proteins obtain these functions due to the shape each protein adopts. There are four different levels a protein structure can adopt, these include primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary, these can be seen in figure 1. The primary structure allows the amino acids of a protein to fold into the other three structure so that the protein can carry out the function encoded in the amino acids (Albert al et.,2013). The secondary structure is where α helix and the β sheet folds form. These two types of folds form as a result of hydrogen bonding between groups in the polypeptide backbone, shown in figure 2 (Albert al et., 2013,130). The tertiary structure is where the secondary structure and any type of loop, coils and fold start to form in between the N- and C-bonds (Albert al et., 2013, 133). The quaternary structure is the final level of a protein and this structure is very complex. This structure has more than one polypeptide chain and not all proteins can possess this structure (Albert al et., 2013). These level of protein structure help determine the shape of protein and therefore the function each protein will undergo. This article will cover the basic information about the protein Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase or commonly known as RuBisCO.
