The Progressive Era was a time period between the years 1900-1920 and it marked a time in American history in which society was bursting with enthusiasm to improve life in the industrial age by making political and social changes through government action that ultimately led to a higher quality of life for American citizens. Progressives were known for their beliefs in limiting the power of big business, strengthening the power of the states, and were advocators against corruption and social injustice. These progressive reformers as well as the Federal Government successfully managed to improve the quality of life and establish a precedent for a move active government, although neither was completely successful in solving significant issues the nation faced. With the dawning of the 20th century came an emergence of social awareness as muckrakers, investigative journalists who were reform minded and generally wrote for popular magazines and newspapers that exposed the ills of society and corruption in the government, opened the blind eye of ignorant Americans to these issues. One of the first to strike was Lincoln Steffens as he exposed how city officials worked in league with big business to maintain power while corrupting the public treasury. It became clear to the government that reforms were desperately needed, and Theodore Roosevelt provided the nation with just that as he sought broad reforms and regulations at the national level during his presidency. Roosevelt utilized his domestic program, the “Square Deal”, to take action against bad trusts, or large monopolies like the Northern Securities Act as well as restrain the good trusts. He distinguished between these trusts, describing “good trusts” as good services that provide... ... middle of paper ... ...t vote. (DOC H) Eventually, women reached their goal with the passage of the 19th amendment, prohibiting the denial of the right to vote based on gender, but African Americans didn’t see major change for decades to come. The Progressive Era marked a time of change for America, as lifestyle for millions was improved but change was slow to come, and in major groups in society no change was seen at all. But it was a time period in which the government worked more with the people than it ever had before, and the president took the concerns of his people and incorporated them into his policies. While many efforts were made to regulate business, child labor, and sanitization laws, significant issues such as civil rights for African Americans and equality for women were not effectively covered at the national level by progressive era reformers and the federal government.
The Progressive Era was a period in which the federal government increased its legislation and its grasp of the nation. There were three distinct pieces of federal legislation that seem to stick out, The Meat Inspection Act The Federal Reserve Act,, and The Hepburn Act. All of this legislation gave the government an extremely large amount of power to regulate business and industry as well as the people of the United States of America.
Within the period of 1900-1920, many national reforms were rising to the top as Progressive Era reformers and the federal government heard the voices of the people. The effectiveness of Progressivism is a controversial subject for some, but the future was changed through the events of any actions a president made, the rights of people, and unfair treatment and conditions. This era brings changes to our society that also changes the future of it. These two decades brought forth successful times in bettering America.
During the 1900’s the Progressive Era was a point in time of political, economic, and social reform for the United States in the. It was a time when the citizens of America looked towards their government as the driving force for change in our country. Though the methods of these presidents were very different, President’s Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson will always be remembered as the progressive presidents who fought for change.
Where did some of modern America's issues originate from? The answer to that is the Progressive Era. The Legislation of that era laid all of the groundwork for today, and much of it is still in public debate today. Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson, three of the presidents from that era, all played roles in the groundwork. These presidents passed acts, tariffs, and amendments that are still with us, and debated today.
Reformers known as Progressives attempted to undo the problems caused by industrialization. The Progressive movement sought to end the influence of large corporations, provide more rights and benefits to workers, and end the control possessed by party leaders. At the national level, Progressivism centered on defeating the power of large businesses. The Progressive Era was a period in American history in which improving working conditions, exposing corruption, improving the way of life, expanding democracy, and making reforms were the objectives at hand. With the emergence of the Progressive Era, two important figures gradually emerged as well.
The turn of the century was marked by a movement known as the Progressive Era, during which many groups sought to reshape the nation's government and society in response to the pressure of urbanization and industrialization. Progressives were mainly members of the Post-Civil War generation that made an attempt to master a world much different then that of their parents.

The Progressives were people who tried to make the life of the average American better, they believed in the ability of humans to create a better world. The Progressives were primarily middle class citizens such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, businessmen, etc. Many of them were part of the Republican and Democratic parties. During the Progressive Era there were two major factors that made this time unbearable which were Child Labor and unsafe working conditions. This time, The Progressive Era happened during 1890-1920. Many changes were made to the United States. Many people were apart of this movement like Andrew Carnegie and Upton Sinclair. Like many during this time they wanted improvement and that's what they achieved.
The progressive era was a time period that opened the eyes of Americans. Rapid growth and industrialization caused huge strains on the labor force and government intervention was needed. There were key moments that pushed the American people into a progressive state and key moments that spoke measures of the success they had. The progressive era was just the beginning of the movement and set the bar for the rest of the twentieth century on what was expected from the government and our presidents. The Progressive era in America (roughly late nineteenth century into the 1930s) was in response to government exploitation, bigotry, child labor, unpleasant working conditions in processing plants, absence of human rights for the ladies and minorities, and environmental degradation. Numerous positive changes were made: thanks President Theodore Roosevelt, who demanded safeguarding America's common assets; he likewise busted imposing business models and called for justice for women.
The Progressive Movement, lasting from 1901-1920, was a time of great change in America. Originating as a response to corporate and political corruption at the turn of the century, progressives emphasized improving American society by taming capitalism. However, with this political and economic reform came social injustice. While America made great strides towards new and more efficient business, banking, and politics, the early twentieth century showed conservative approaches to issues like racial, ethnic, and religious equality.
In conclusion, the Progressive Era was a rapidly changing time period in America. People were more self-involved and speaking out against injustices. This was a period of moral reform for the growing middle class, women, and minorities. This time period was a great awakening socially; for the welfare of families and children in this country. America had grown more aware of the “cause and affects” that society, politics, and economics have on the individuals that make up America.
After looking closely at all four documents, the Progressive Era ended child labor, improved working conditions, and brought victory to women suffrage. Goals of the movement and people who took part in it have also been highlighted. It is concluded that Progressivism movement was effective and changing American values and lifestyles.
During class, the Progressive Era from 1890-1916 was discussed. The countless reforms happened in the Progressive Era were bound to be controversial. Nevertheless, based on our study, it was my contention that the Progressive Era was successful on account of the changes made on social welfare and on the role of presidents.
Progressive presidents did their best to instigate change through legislative measures, civilians pushed for those bills, and many raised their voices for equality. However, there was not any real immediate change. While reformers may bot have had all of the answers or the perfect solutions, they set the wheels in motion for the society we have today.
